Requirements
  • A high school diploma or general education degree (GED) is required.
  • Meet at least one of the following: successfully complete an accredited medical assistant program; hold CMA, CCMA, or RMA certification; or meet eligibility requirements to take the CMA or RMA exam and obtain the credential within six months of hire. The Vocational Coordinator determines eligibility for CMA or RMA within six months.
  • Obtain BLS certification within 90 days of hire or transfer.
  • Have knowledge of clinical skills required for Medical Assistant certification or registration.
  • Demonstrate effective problem-solving and prioritization skills.
  • Communicate clearly and effectively with patients, doctors, and other staff, and maintain positive working relationships with physicians, office staff, employees, and other healthcare professionals.
  • Handle patient information confidentially and maintain patient confidentiality.
  • Work independently and function as part of a healthcare team.
  • Have personal computer skills and be able to input and retrieve data from the organization's computerized systems; EMR experience is highly desirable.
  • Perform work requiring sustained alertness and concentration, including computer or CRT use for 40 to 70 percent of the time; stand or walk considerably, lift objects weighing 20 pounds or less regularly, assist with heavier tasks such as moving patients, and assume some fatiguing positions and motions.
Responsibilities
  • Prepare patients for examinations by conducting assessments, obtaining histories and vital signs, reconciling medications, and performing routine hearing, vision, or other tests.
  • Document pertinent information accurately in patient charts, maintain documentation standards, and review charts before appointments to ensure requests and documents are in place.
  • Administer treatments as requested by the physician.
  • Obtain specimens for urine testing, phlebotomy, and other purposes.
  • Perform laboratory tests as directed by the physician.
  • Set up and assist physicians with procedures, including laceration repair and pap or pelvic procedures.
  • Schedule outside tests or procedures, such as x-rays and MRIs, in other departments or facilities, and provide patients with appropriate preparation instructions.
  • Coordinate admissions and referrals, and call in prescriptions.
  • Stock examination rooms and conduct daily inventory of supplies, reporting items to be ordered.
  • Assist with scheduling appointments in the EMR system as required.
  • Screen calls and determine urgency, the need for appointments, or whether phone advice is sufficient.
  • Assist with completing patient forms, including workers' compensation and disability forms.
  • Attend staff, educational, and other required meetings.
  • Perform other related duties assigned by nurses, the practice manager, or physician.
