Requirements
  • Consecutive employment in a position with comparable responsibilities within the past five years.
  • Ability to use a computer to communicate via email.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, and Adobe tools.
  • At least two years of certification in one or more listed AHIMA or AAPC medical coding credentials, including RHIA, RHIT, CCA, CCS, CPC, COC, CIC, or CRC.
  • A high school degree or equivalent.
  • A medical coding certificate and RHIT or CPC credential through AAPC or AHIMA, while meeting state licensure requirements.
  • Two years of medical coding experience.
  • Understanding of medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology.
  • Ability to work independently or as an active member of a team.
  • Strong computer skills in data entry and coding, including knowledge of Electronic Medical Record software and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to maintain coding certification and attend required in-service training.
  • Ability to protect patient information and maintain the security and confidentiality of medical records and Protected Health Information.
  • Ability to follow coding guidelines and legal requirements and comply with federal and state regulations.
  • U.S. citizenship is required.
Responsibilities
  • Review health record documentation and assign accurate diagnosis and procedure codes using system edits, Military Health System-specific guidance, and commercial coding guidance.
  • Review and accurately code or audit office and hospital procedures for reimbursement.
  • Review coding and abstracting for inpatient, ambulatory surgery, observation, emergency room, clinic, and diagnostic patient types to achieve the required coder accuracy.
  • Audit vendor and internal risk-adjustment coding to ensure accuracy and identify and mitigate risks.
  • Receive and review patient charts and documents for accuracy.
  • Ensure that all codes are current and active.
  • Report missing or incomplete documentation.
  • Meet daily coding production requirements.
  • Review medical records and source documents and collect clinical data according to Military Health System specifications and guidelines.
  • Enter data accurately into abstraction software using a personal computer, keyboard, and mouse.
  • Update and maintain document lists.
  • Perform accurate charge entries.
  • Ensure proper coding on provider documentation.
  • Serve as a resource for insurance resolutions and coding questions.
  • Handle co-pays, balances, and charge posting.
  • Follow Department of Defense and Defense Health Agency directives, guidance, instructions, policies, procedures, rules, and standards concerning patient information and privacy practices.
  • Perform additional duties assigned by the Coding Manager as needed.
  • Produce thorough, accurate, and appropriately documented work products that comply with established criteria and meet milestones and delivery schedules.
Desired Qualifications
  • A bachelor’s degree in a related field is preferred.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology is preferred.
  • Clinical background and previous chart abstraction experience are preferred.
