About the job

Requirements
  • Completion of a degree in a biological science including coursework in Anatomy, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience consisting of 2 years of coursework with a minimum of 60 semester hours of college courses, including 24 semester hours of relevant science courses (chemistry, biology, anatomy), plus experience as a surgical gross-room technician.
  • Excellent data entry, word processing, spelling, grammar, and editing skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize responsibilities and perform well under pressure to meet deadlines.
  • Histotechnologist I classification requires a four-year college degree in a biological science or equivalent combination of education and experience in a hospital surgical pathology laboratory, including some demonstrated experience performing cryostat sectioning, staining, or histology techniques.
  • Histotechnologist II classification requires a four-year college degree in a biological science or equivalent, including 2 years of surgical pathology experience cutting in (grossing) biopsies, performing frozen sections, and expected successful completion of the department training program cutting in complex surgical specimens.
Responsibilities
  • Receive, accession, and prepare or gross specified surgical specimens, including biopsies and larger specimens; examine, weigh, measure, fix, ink, cut representative samples, cassette, submit specimens for histological processing, dictate clinical descriptions for transcription, contact clinicians or surgeons regarding clinical information, and enter information into the Pathology computer system.
  • Process a wide variety of specimen types, primarily biopsies at the Histotechnologist I level; at the Histotechnologist II level, gross specified complex specimens with greater independence.
  • Pick up frozen section requests from surgeons in the operating room and perform frozen sectioning and staining for rapid diagnosis by the pathologist.
  • Assist with specimen photography and perform other technical duties as needed.
  • Work variable schedules and rotate at other sites as needed.
  • Assist with autopsies and other Morgue duties, embed tissues, and perform other duties in Histology or Electron Microscopy laboratories as assigned.
  • Perform gross sectioning of various biopsy specimens by weighing, measuring, dividing, cassetteing, submitting rush specimens by cutoff time, dictating gross descriptions, inking specimens, documenting special instructions, entering Histology data using the barcoding system, and loading Histology tissue processors as needed.
  • Work proactively with Histology lab staff to ensure optimal tissue fixation of specimens submitted by Pathology Residents, advising residents as needed.
  • After completing training and under direct pathologist supervision, gross specified less-complex to complex surgical specimens as determined by the Medical Director, applying established guidelines and obtaining guidance from the attending pathologist or Lead Pathologists’ Assistant as needed.
  • Prepare documentation of dissection and tissue-selection methodology for subsequent light microscopic examination by the staff pathologist, and maintain communication with residents assigned to cases.
  • Obtain and communicate with clinicians or surgeons about intraoperative specimens; prepare rapid H&E-stained frozen section slides for pathologist diagnosis; orient, sample, mount, freeze, and section specimens using a cryostat; record sampling methodology; label and deliver slides; and place residual tissue in appropriate fixative as directed.
  • Reconcile autopsy permit information with decedents, inform residents about legal aspects and permit requirements, coordinate procedures with residents, attendings, clinicians, and other hospital personnel, and prepare tables and instruments.
  • Verify body identification, transfer bodies from the morgue refrigerator, perform specialized autopsy procedures including organ evisceration, brain and spinal cord removal, organ dissection, and suturing following established protocols and infection-control procedures.
  • Decontaminate tables, instruments, and equipment after autopsies and conferences; notify Patient Relations or ED Registration when autopsies are completed; accession autopsy data in CoPath; and prepare fixatives and laboratory reagents.
  • Maintain morgue receipt and release protocols, review release documents, harvest research tissue as directed, prepare tissues and organs for conferences, maintain specimen filing and storage, prepare bodies for family viewing, assist with specimen radiography and photography, manage the digital gross photography archive, and maintain departmental log books.
  • Provide technical support to the cytology laboratory by forwarding specimens and preparing fresh and fixed specimens using direct smears, fixation and air-drying, centrifugation, cytocentrifugation, and T2 ThinPrep processing; stain, coverslip, label, and triage slides; accession and barcode gynecological material; process samples on a multiload T3 processor and Imager; prepare urinary samples for ImmunoCyt fluorescent testing, research cases, cell blocks, special stains, and flow cytometry; and perform basic maintenance and troubleshooting of laboratory automation.
  • Perform electron microscopy technical procedures, including specimen receipt and gross evaluation, fixation, tissue processing, thick and ultrathin sectioning, electron-microscope operation, examination and photography, and darkroom printing of micrographs; communicate with pathologists regarding diagnostic priorities.
  • Maintain electron microscopy technical standards, select cortical tissue containing glomeruli for EM and IF studies, use non-contaminating grossing technique, document work and adhere to processing schedules, labeling, Standard Precautions, and chemical-safety standards; prepare blocks and sections to minimize tissue damage, loss, contamination, and artifacts.
Desired Qualifications
  • A bachelor’s degree in biological science with experience in a hospital gross room setting.
  • Histotechnologist III classification: a four-year college degree in a biological science or equivalent, including 3 years of surgical pathology experience grossing biopsies and performing frozen sections, with at least 1 year grossing complex specimens.
  • Histotechnologist Lead classification: a four-year college degree in a biological science or equivalent, including 5 years of surgical pathology experience grossing biopsies and performing frozen sections, with at least 4 years grossing complex specimens.
