Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Successful completion of Medical Assistant training from an approved technical school, or verifiable applicable work experience in a patient-care setting, is required.
  • Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider certification is required.
  • If hired after January 1, 2015, current certification by an accepted Medical Assistant certifying or registering agency is required within six months of hire, unless an alternate accepted certification is approved case by case.
Responsibilities
  • Perform patient care under the direction and supervision of a physician or Advanced Practice Provider in an ambulatory-care setting.
  • Gather patient data through interviews and observation.
  • Assist patients and families with preparation for examinations.
  • Assist the physician or Advanced Practice Provider during examinations and procedures.
  • Document treatments, procedures, and patient education according to organizational and department policies.
  • Act as a patient liaison by scheduling specialty testing and physician consultations and providing scheduling information.
  • Process incoming and outgoing calls independently and professionally using clinical judgment.
  • Enter medication, laboratory, and diagnostic-imaging orders into the electronic medical system under provider direction.
  • Follow organizational and department policies, procedures, value statements, safety practices, infection-control standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Assess patient data according to the age-specific needs of patients in the assigned department or unit.
  • Participate in quality-assurance and quality-indicator activities as assigned.
  • Assist the business office with reception, scheduling, and patient discharge as needed.
  • Maintain punctual attendance and compliance with organizational policies and applicable standards.
