About the job

Requirements
  • A PhD in computer science, machine learning, artificial intelligence, or a related technical field; alternatively, a Master's degree with equivalent applied science experience or an equivalent body of work.
  • Experience developing agentic artificial intelligence systems or large language model applications through an end-to-end product cycle.
  • Experience designing evaluations for systems that have no standard benchmark.
  • Experience writing substantial research or production code in Python or a comparable language.
  • Experience leading complex scientific work across engineering and product partners.
  • Evidence of independent decisions in ambiguous, consequential technical environments.
Responsibilities
  • Own the scientific strategy for human-artificial intelligence collaboration across agentic and multimodal systems.
  • Convert desired interaction behaviors into falsifiable hypotheses, evaluation tasks, and system requirements.
  • Build the evaluation system that measures teammate behavior, trust, adaptation, human contribution, and failure recovery.
  • Design agent systems that use memory, tools, planning, and recovery, then test them with the people who do the work.
  • Design data collection and curation for language, speech, and interaction traces.
  • Build significant parts of the experimental stack because that stack does not exist yet.
  • Diagnose failures across data, models, orchestration, evaluation, and product interaction.
  • Define the requirements engineering needs to turn a proven method into a product capability.
  • Partner with design, product, engineering, and behavioral research from problem definition through product validation.
  • Run experiments with partner product teams, then report what worked, what failed, and what changed as a result.
  • Set the standard for reproducible experiments, evidence, and scientific review inside the Lab.
  • Mentor scientists and engineers while continuing hands-on work.
  • Represent the work in internal reviews and appropriate external scientific venues.
  • Build working systems that test how artificial intelligence teammates proactively adapt, earn trust, manage attention, and strengthen human judgment.
  • Observe contact center agents and bench scientists using the system to identify where it helps or intrudes, and use that evidence to develop new hypotheses.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience with post-training methods, including supervised fine-tuning and reinforcement learning.
  • Experience with multimodal models across language, speech, and vision.
  • Experience with speech systems or real-time conversational systems.
  • Experience measuring collaboration quality, trust, adaptation, or human contribution in artificial intelligence systems.
  • Experience building agent systems that use memory, tools, planning, and recovery mechanisms.
  • Experience founding a scientific program or joining an early team before that team had established its methods.
  • A record of scientific influence through publications, patents, open-source work, or deployed systems.
  • Experience mentoring senior scientists and engineers while continuing hands-on work.
  • Experience partnering with design, product, and behavioral research from problem definition through product validation.
  • Experience taking a proven method into a product team and staying until that team adopted it.

About the company

Amazon runs the largest online store in the United States and rents cloud computing to businesses and governments through Amazon Web Services. AWS pioneered renting computing power over the internet, and Amazon built its own delivery network to get orders to customers quickly. Shoppers buy from Amazon and from independent sellers on its store, and Prime members pay a subscription for fast free shipping, streaming video and music, and other perks. AWS rents out computing power, storage, databases, and AI tools so companies can run software without owning servers, and Amazon also makes Kindle e-readers and Echo speakers with the Alexa assistant. Jeff Bezos founded Amazon in 1994, and it is based in Seattle, Washington.

What believers are saying

  • AI drives growth: AWS's AI and custom-chip sales each more than doubled, passing $25 billion a year by June 2026.
  • Stock grants gained value: shares hit a record in August 2026, making Amazon the fifth company to reach $3 trillion.
  • Ads are a third engine beside stores and AWS: they grew 26% to $19.8 billion in the June 2026 quarter.

What critics are saying

  • AWS's lead is shrinking: in the June 2026 quarter, Google Cloud grew 82% and Microsoft's Azure 43%, versus AWS's 37%.
  • Job security has slipped: Amazon cut 30,000 corporate jobs in October 2025 and January 2026 to reduce management layers.
  • Expect five office days a week: Amazon ended its three-day hybrid policy for corporate staff in January 2025.

What makes Amazon unique

  • Most of Amazon's profit comes from cloud: AWS made 21% of sales but 60% of operating profit in mid-2026.
  • Amazon is America's biggest parcel carrier by volume: it handled 6.9 billion packages in 2025, more than the Postal Service.
  • Writing matters more than slides: Amazon meetings open with silent reading of a six-page memo instead of PowerPoint.

Meta falls 7% as $34.9B capex tops cash flow; investors punish AI spending cuts and hikes

Meta shares fell 7% on October 22 even though third-quarter sales rose 26% and beat estimates. Capital expenditure of $34.9 billion topped operating cash flow as AI spending outran the company's cash generation. MetLife's Drew Matus says investors punish both capex cuts and hikes. "I don't actually really know what people want from these people," he said. Microsoft and Alphabet report Wednesday, followed by Amazon and Intel on Thursday. The four make up about 15% of the Nasdaq 100, which has fallen roughly 7% this month. The Federal Reserve decides on rates Wednesday afternoon, hours before Microsoft and Alphabet report. Matus expects it to skip a move and revisit policy in December.

Amazon's $74.99 Bee Frontier AI wearable hides a $143.88-a-year subscription bet

Amazon has launched the Bee Frontier, a $74.99 AI wearable that clips to clothing or is worn on the wrist. It listens to conversations and uses AI to create to-do lists, summaries, and reminders. The bigger bet is the subscription. Bee Pro costs $11.99 a month, or $143.88 a year, and adds Alexa+, Amazon.com links, third-party apps, and a personal AI assistant. Amazon says the Amazon.com link can suggest products mentioned in conversation. Amazon also launched the $99.99 Bee Eclipse, a credit card-sized model with over 21 days of battery life. Amazon says neither device stores raw audio, and transcripts are encrypted with user-managed keys. Amazon acquired Bee in 2025 and has not said how many users pay for Pro.

Amazon and Microsoft's $395B AI spending is already paying off through cloud growth

AI spending could pass $1.3 trillion in 2027, according to S&P Global, and investors doubt much of it will pay off. Amazon and Microsoft are already seeing returns on their cloud and AI investments. Amazon raised its capital expenditures to $220 billion this year, mostly for AI. Its cloud arm, Amazon Web Services (AWS), holds 28% of the market, per Synergy Research Group, and has an annualized revenue run rate of $169 billion. AWS posted $16.6 billion in operating income, a margin above 39%. Microsoft is spending $175 billion. Its Azure cloud service holds 21% of the market, with an annualized run rate of $100 billion, up 41% year on year. Management says demand exceeds available capacity. The author favours Microsoft, citing more than 30 million paid Copilot seats, up 50% in several months.

Amazon promises 30,000 entry-level UK jobs by 2030 after cutting 30,000 corporate roles

Amazon plans to create 30,000 entry-level jobs in the UK by 2030 through a new programme called the Amazon Youth Promise. Salaries will start at £31,000 (roughly $41,500), and the company will also train young people not in education, employment or training (Neets). The UK has about one million Neets, mostly in its largest cities. Amazon joins Microsoft, Cisco, and IBM in pledging jobs through the government's Youth Guarantee initiative. The announcement comes as Amazon cuts white-collar roles. It let go of roughly 1,000 workers in India, the UK, and its retail business in early October, on top of 30,000 corporate jobs cut over the past year to focus on AI. "This is exactly the kind of employer leadership that will reach young people in the communities that need it the most," said Pat McFadden, work and pensions secretary.
