Requirements
  • An Associate's degree in biological science with an anatomy background, or one year of autopsy assistant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to perform autopsy procedures while following universal precautions and the autopsy procedure manual, especially during infectious cases.
  • Ability to safely handle chemicals, maintain equipment and supplies, and keep instruments in good working condition.
Responsibilities
  • Assist pathologists, pathologists' assistants, residents, and student fellows with postmortem examinations and train entering residents and year-out student fellows in evisceration techniques.
  • Perform body incisions and evisceration of organs during postmortem examinations, deliver specimens for special studies, and prepare cadavers for delivery to funeral directors.
  • Obtain consent forms, charts, and paperwork; set up the dissection area, autopsy room, instruments, and specimen containers; retrieve records; notify the prosecutor; and complete autopsy-related logging and paperwork.
  • Remove bodies from the cooler, place them on the autopsy table, assist with gross examination and specimen sampling, and return bodies to the cooler after cleaning.
  • Maintain the cleanliness and supplies of the autopsy suite, morgue room, trim areas, and cooler; disinfect the morgue after procedures and conferences; and restock spill kits.
  • Serve as liaison to the administrative assistant for technology issues, rinse brains, ready COWs, and remain available for brain-cutting and autopsy conferences.
  • Maintain equipment, request inspections and service, keep maintenance and temperature logs, and arrange instrument sharpening twice per year.
  • Collect and deliver tissue for incineration, pick up placentas for cremation, and verify identification and cremation tags.
  • Maintain logs of autopsy cases, delivered bodies, and organs for disposal; coordinate specimens saved for the specimen museum; and ready bodies for family viewing as needed.
  • Monitor the disposition of bodies in the cooler, verify identifications against log books, and contact funeral homes or units when discrepancies occur.
  • Pick up scrubs from the laundry for Neuropathology and Autopsy Pathology faculty, prosecutors, and technicians.
  • Assist funeral directors with body removals and perform other assigned duties.
