Requirements
  • Currently enrolled in a graduate degree program or as a post-doctoral student, with academic enrollment maintained throughout the internship.
  • Pursuing a graduate degree in Data Science, Computer Science with a Data Science concentration, or Applied Statistics.
  • Use logic and data for advanced problem-solving.
  • Apply critical thinking and analytical skills.
  • Articulate complex technical issues to less experienced audiences.
  • Demonstrate analytical skills and written and oral communication abilities.
  • Be available to participate in the summer intern program for 40 hours per week.
  • Use Excel, PowerPoint, and Word at an advanced level.
  • Have college-level experience with coding practices and languages such as Java, C/C++, or Python.
  • Have experience with business tools such as Windows, Office Professional, Visio, and SharePoint.
  • Maintain regular and reliable job attendance.
  • Work effectively in an in-office/open-office environment with moderate noise.
Responsibilities
  • Apply innovative thinking and problem-solving skills to address data-related challenges within Information Technology Services.
  • Meet with key leaders to learn how data science supports technology solution design, delivery, operation, and promotion.
  • Clean, prepare, and analyze datasets to generate actionable insights for IT-related projects.
  • Interpret data analysis results and document findings in clear, concise reports for stakeholders.
  • Learn and apply AARP’s Design Thinking framework to understand user needs and achieve business-aligned results.
  • Explore innovative, user-centered solutions for data science projects.
  • Collaborate with technology stakeholders to deliver data-driven service solutions that improve system security, performance, and availability.
  • Apply agile principles and practices while working on IT capability and platform team initiatives.
  • Support process improvement efforts, including constructing and deploying process-centric Business Process Management solutions.
  • Develop predictive models using supervised and unsupervised machine learning techniques for IT-related challenges.
  • Evaluate machine learning model performance using metrics such as R², RMSE, and F1 scores, and iterate on improvements.
  • Complete an end-of-internship project and present findings to IT leadership.
Desired Qualifications
  • Foundational experience with Python and basic machine learning concepts such as classification, regression, or simple predictive models.
  • Exposure to Natural Language Processing concepts, including text classification, keyword extraction, or sentiment analysis.
  • Familiarity with modern artificial intelligence tools or frameworks, including introductory use of BERT or similar Natural Language Processing libraries.
  • Interest in applying artificial intelligence to business problems such as improving IT service processes or analyzing operational data.
  • Awareness of AI-assisted tools such as Microsoft Copilot or similar platforms.
  • Interest in building or interacting with lightweight automation or AI agents, such as Copilot Studio, chat-based workflows, or task automation.
