Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree or equivalent in Computer Science, Physics, Engineering, or a related field is required.
  • At least 5 years of enterprise network experience is required, including management of switches, routers, network security devices, load balancers, and network services.
  • Experience with High Performance Computing networks, including InfiniBand and Ethernet, is required.
  • Experience with network management and monitoring systems and log management tools is required.
  • Intermediate understanding of Domain Name System and Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol is required.
  • Experience supporting a multi-site global campus wide-area network using Dynamic Multipoint Virtual Private Networking over public and private connectivity is required.
  • Experience administering and securing Linux-based systems and switches, orchestrating containers, and configuring data storage systems is required.
  • Intermediate to advanced knowledge of designing, configuring, and operating an enterprise-level Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol network using Open Shortest Path First and Border Gateway Protocol is required.
  • Knowledge of Border Gateway Protocol and Open Shortest Path First configurations and traffic engineering is required.
  • Understanding of the Open Systems Interconnection model and how each layer applies is required.
  • Ability to provide documentation and customer support through interpersonal, presentation, written, and verbal communication is required.
Responsibilities
  • Design, implement, manage, and monitor the dedicated High Speed Research Network and support research technology services and High Performance Computing infrastructure.
  • Develop and optimize network solutions to improve the performance, security, and scalability of the High Speed Research Network and related research computing services.
  • Extend the High Speed Research Network across research sites and enhance external network connectivity.
  • Develop scalable tools and processes that can be shared by information technology staff and university faculty researchers.
  • Partner with the university information technology network infrastructure team to align High Speed Research Network operations and configuration with network policies, standards, and best practices.
  • Perform capacity planning and monitor network reliability and performance.
  • Provide problem resolution for network components supporting the university's research units.
Desired Qualifications
  • A master's degree or equivalent in Computer Science, Physics, Engineering, or a related field is preferred.
  • At least 5 years of experience with wavelength-division multiplexing systems such as Infinera is preferred.
  • Experience as a network engineer in an academic or research setting is preferred.
  • Experience with quality data collection and following data privacy and security procedures for data handling and analysis is preferred.
  • A record of programming, architecting, and deploying systems that are used or have produced concrete results is preferred.
  • Experience in a consulting, collaborative, or service-oriented role with researchers or clients is preferred.
  • Experience managing, administering, and migrating software platforms in a hybrid environment is preferred.
  • Understanding of physical network media and participation in designing and building facility cabling plants is preferred.
  • Understanding of project management and ability to create network-level diagrams and documentation are preferred.
  • Excellent understanding of desktops, networks, hardware, and cloud platforms is preferred.
  • Ability to adapt to changing technologies, new applications, and dynamic environments is preferred.
  • Desire and ability to write content on relevant technical subjects is preferred.
  • Organizational, project management, and technical leadership skills, including the ability to manage complex, large-scale research projects, are preferred.
  • Ability to communicate technical concepts clearly to non-technical audiences is preferred.
