Requirements
  • Two to three years of experience in health care is required.
  • Computer experience is required.
  • The employee must be familiar with insurance plans, insurance requirements, and collection practices such as the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
  • The employee must demonstrate knowledge of state and federal regulations, HIPAA guidelines, Health Care Financing Administration guidelines, TennCare guidelines, and other third-party payer requirements.
  • The employee must demonstrate knowledge of insurance carrier payer requirements and patient information needed to ensure appropriate reimbursement.
  • The employee must have no current disciplinary action as a Patient Account Representative Level I.
Responsibilities
  • Work patient accounts according to department policies and procedures under the direction of the Manager and Supervisor.
  • Handle and resolve complex issues with little or no supervision and provide training and assistance to Patient Account Representative Level I staff.
  • Recognize and identify issues pertaining to the working of accounts and assist the Collection Supervisor.
  • Perform functions relating to the collection of patient accounts.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, the public, co-workers, physicians, facilities, agencies, offices, and other facility personnel using verbal, nonverbal, and written communication skills.
  • Consult and work collaboratively with supervisors, co-workers, department management, and other facility personnel.
  • Attend required meetings, committees, in-service training, monthly staff meetings, and discussions regarding work performance and departmental or facility updates.
  • Provide assistance to new employees.
  • Participate in intradepartmental quality-improvement activities and departmental process-improvement initiatives.
  • Maintain accurate and timely workload completion and achieve departmental quality-audit results of at least 95% accuracy.
  • Follow departmental policies, procedures, protocols, quality-assurance programs, safety standards, environmental and infection-control standards.
  • Protect confidential information and maintain compliance with applicable regulations and guidelines.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or requested.
  • Promote positive public relations for the department and facilities.
  • Assist Vice President, Director, Managers, and Supervisors with activities and projects as needed.
  • Report promptly for work, complete assigned tasks, and ensure follow-through.
  • Use available equipment, supplies, and other resources appropriately and attend training programs to increase skills.
Desired Qualifications
  • Knowledge of medical terminology, claims submission, and customer service.
  • Preference may be given to individuals possessing a high school diploma or GED.
