Requirements
  • A master's degree in a pathologists' assistant program is required, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Pathology Assistant certification upon hire or a limited permit per regulatory requirements upon hire is required.
Responsibilities
  • Assist pathologists and pathology residents in the gross examination of surgical specimens and autopsies.
  • Provide grossing coverage at affiliates on a rotational basis as needed.
  • Dictate gross descriptions, including specimen color, consistency, weight, measurements, abnormalities, and unusual findings.
  • Perform necessary specimen dissection while maintaining positive patient identification, including proper cutting and appropriate tissue submission for microscopic examination based on disease process and clinical history.
  • Consult with the attending pathologist or fellow on complex or unusual specimens.
  • Perform special techniques, including frozen sectioning for immediate assessment, touch preparations, cytogenetics tissue preparation, flow cytometry, gene rearrangement, electron microscopy, decalcification, specimen radiology, and STAT freezing.
  • Provide coverage to the Postmortem Medicine Unit of Strong Memorial Hospital in the performance of autopsies.
  • Complete research requests and clinical trials according to protocol without compromising specimen diagnosis and evaluation.
  • Train pathology residents and histologists as needed in grossing and special techniques for preparing surgical pathology specimens.
