Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent GED is required.
  • At least one year of related work experience is required.
  • Basic Life Support certification is required within six months.
  • The employee must meet qualifications to provide care for patients in the assigned clinical age range.
  • The role requires reliable attendance and the ability to meet full-time scheduling requirements, including three 12-hour night shifts, every other weekend, and holidays.
  • A consecutive two-week classroom orientation from Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. is required at the start of employment.
Responsibilities
  • Provide advanced patient care under the supervision and direction of a Registered Nurse or other licensed nurse.
  • Assist patients with activities of daily living, including hygiene, toileting, mobility, meals, and changing linens.
  • Collect vital signs and daily weights.
  • Perform point-of-care patient testing, instrument maintenance, and quality control.
  • Perform venipunctures and skin punctures to obtain blood specimens when permitted.
  • Obtain, maintain, process, and transport patient specimens according to policy, procedure, physician orders, and laboratory standards.
  • Provide advanced dressing care, suctioning, Foley catheter removal, peripheral intravenous removal, nasogastric tube removal, and nasal swabs as assigned.
  • Turn and reposition patients.
  • Perform equipment checks and exchanges and troubleshoot equipment and supplies.
  • Check code carts and oxygen storage cabinets.
  • Document patient care, observations, physical needs, changes in condition, and other information in the medical record.
  • Report changes in patient condition to licensed personnel in a timely manner.
  • Provide one-to-one patient safety watch when assigned.
  • Perform clerical duties for admissions, transfers, discharges, and deaths.
  • Facilitate patient throughput activities and transcribe and process orders according to unit standards.
  • Release and confirm ordered tests to appropriate departments.
  • Coordinate patient transportation to multiple tests.
  • Obtain and communicate electronic information for the nursing unit, including scheduling tests and faxing consults.
  • Assist with ordering stationery, floor stock, patient-care, and nursing supplies.
  • Communicate with food services to ensure appropriate patient diets.
  • Operate, troubleshoot, and arrange maintenance for computers, fax machines, phones, and other clerical equipment.
  • Transport non-controlled medications to and from the Pharmacy and within the unit as needed.
  • Transport blood products to and from the Blood Bank as needed.
  • Perform discharge follow-up phone calls and coordinate virtual discharge appointment teams.
  • Support staff with five-minute drills and quality rounds and participate in regulatory readiness activities as needed.
  • Prepare and deliver breast milk and infant and pediatric formulas when assigned.
  • Serve as a preceptor and mentor for new staff and students.
  • Maintain the patient-care and unit environment in accordance with organizational policies, procedures, and practices.
