Expired food, cobwebs, cockroaches found at Swiggy Instamart, Flipkart, Zepto dark stores in Hyderabad. The findings have raised concerns about food safety standards in the dark-store network that powers Hyderabad's rapid grocery delivery business. Read Time: 2 mins During the inspections, officials found a range of violations. The Telangana food safety team inspected 16 quick-commerce dark stores linked to Swiggy Instamart, Flipkart and Zepto, and immediately suspended the licences of four after finding expired food, pest infestation, fungal contamination and poor storage conditions. The findings have raised concerns about food safety standards in the dark-store network that powers the city's rapid grocery delivery business. Ten enforcement teams comprising food safety officers and police personnel inspected 16 dark stores operated by Swiggy Instamart, Flipkart, Zepto and Dropx Logistics across Hyderabad's Core Urban Region. During the inspections, officials found a range of violations, including expired and damaged food products, spoiled vegetables, dusty and rusted storage racks, cobwebs, improper storage practices, cockroach and pest infestations, labelling violations, and inadequate cold-room temperature maintenance. Authorities also collected 15 food samples suspected of adulteration. The samples will be tested as part of the ongoing investigation. The four outlets whose FSSAI licences were suspended are: * Swiggy Instamart store at Pet Basheerabad * Swiggy Instamart store at Saidabad * Flipkart Instakart store at Panjeshah Road, Charminar * Zepto store at Ram Koti Officials directed all four outlets to cease operations immediately in the interest of public health. In addition, five outlets have been issued show-cause notices, while three others have received improvement notices. The establishments will be subject to re-inspection and could face further regulatory action, including penalties, depending on compliance and the outcome of the investigation. The findings have put the spotlight on food safety practices inside dark stores, which serve as fulfilment centres for the rapid delivery of groceries and other consumer products to customers' homes. As quick-commerce platforms continue to expand, regulators are likely to maintain closer scrutiny of storage, hygiene and inventory-management practices to ensure consumer safety. FSSAI seeks ban on making, sale of analogue product as paneer' Press Trust of India | Edited by Khadija Irfan Rahim Published: 24th September 2026 8:53 pm IST New Delhi: Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has proposed banning the manufacture and sale of 'analogue product as paneer', as it steps up the clampdown on food adulteration and misleading claims. Analogue paneer is not a dairy product and is made of constituents not derived from milk. The Food regulator has issued a draft Food Safety and Standards (Prohibition and Restrictions on Sales) Amendment Regulations, 2026. "The amendment is proposed...to restrict manufacturing and sale of analogue product as paneer so as to prevent misleading of consumers regarding the nature and composition of the product," FSSAI said. Many states have already banned the manufacturing and sale of analogue paneer. Products already licensed or registered under 'Analogue in Dairy Context' category should discontinue the use of the term 'paneer' in their nomenclature, labelling or marketing. FSSAI has given 60 days to stakeholders for objections or suggestions on the draft regulations seeking to amend the Food Safety and Standards (Prohibition and Restrictions on Sales) Regulations, 2011. In the dairy context, an analogue is a food made to look, taste, or function like milk or a milk product, but with non-dairy ingredients replacing some or all of the real milk components. In the last six months, the FSSAI has stepped up enforcement actions against food business operators (FBOs) and e-commerce platforms for alleged misleading claims/ labelling and hygiene-related issues, among other violations. On Wednesday, the regulator initiated penal action against e-commerce platforms Amazon, Swiggy Instamart, BigBasket, Flipkart India and Zepto for various non-compliances, including misleading claims and sale of prohibited products. It has also cracked down on energy drink makers and alcoholic beverage companies. Stay updated with its WhatsApp & Telegram by subscribing to its channels.
