Requirements
  • Graduation from high school or equivalent is required.
  • Two years of vocational training or two years of relevant work experience may be substituted for vocational training.
  • Basic Life Support certification is required.
  • Proficiency in computerized documentation systems is required.
  • Ability to understand and follow policies, procedures, guidelines, rules, regulations, and applicable state and federal laws is required.
  • Ability to work under stress and accurately perform multiple tasks simultaneously is required.
  • Ability to exercise excellent judgment and function with minimal supervision is required.
  • Typing and word processing skills are recommended.
  • Excellent customer service skills in person and by telephone are required.
Responsibilities
  • Provide clerical duties for the unit under the direction of a Registered Nurse or Physician.
  • Greet patients, visitors, staff, and physicians promptly and courteously and maintain a professional, responsive atmosphere.
  • Answer, screen, and route telephone calls; take accurate messages and seek coverage when away from the work area.
  • Relay messages and open and deliver mail as appropriate.
  • Maintain a neat and organized work environment.
  • Provide clerical support, including transcribing physician orders and entering them into the computer for implementation and ancillary department follow-through.
  • Schedule and arrange diagnostic tests and procedures as ordered and inform staff of required preparation.
  • Enter patient information into the computer system regarding transfers and discharges in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Assemble, maintain, organize, copy, and transfer medical records and send charts to medical records upon discharge.
  • Maintain unit-specific statistics, admission and discharge logs, and other required record-keeping books.
  • Copy, collate, and assemble departmental printed materials, including patient educational information.
  • Perform routine clerical duties for unit and Nursing Service projects.
  • Maintain office supplies and department equipment by checking inventory, preparing and sending requisitions and work orders, conducting routine equipment maintenance, ordering supplies, and storing them appropriately.
  • Maintain confidentiality of patient and hospital information, communications, and documents.
  • Follow departmental and medical center policies regarding scheduling, overtime, sick time, and time off.
  • Arrive punctually, take appropriate breaks, and use sick time appropriately.
