Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Graduation from an accredited Diagnostic Medical Sonography and/or Vascular program is required.
  • ARDMS-Abdominal registration is required, or the candidate must be registry eligible and become registered within one year of hire.
  • CPR certification is required.
  • BLS certification is required.
  • Candidates must have knowledge of ultrasound techniques, disease processes, and technical pitfalls.
  • Candidates must be able to use office software, technology, and relevant computer applications.
  • Candidates must have clear written and verbal communication skills for interacting with colleagues and stakeholders.
  • Candidates must be able to learn new procedures, technologies, and protocols and adapt to changing priorities and work demands.
  • Candidates must be able to work collaboratively with others and contribute to a team environment.
Responsibilities
  • Perform routine and specialty sonographic procedures involving all levels of difficulty.
  • Operate ultrasound scanners and related equipment in accordance with prescribed radiation safety procedures under the direction or supervision of a radiologist and age-appropriate standards of practice.
  • Ensure the diagnostic quality of scans through knowledge of ultrasound techniques, disease processes, and technical pitfalls.
  • Make preliminary interpretations of ultrasound examinations and bring suspected pathology to the attention of the attending physician or fellow.
  • Review patient charts to confirm ordered procedures and acquire pertinent clinical information from patients, hospital charts, electronic medical records, or other available sources.
  • Assist physicians with invasive and special procedures.
  • Greet and escort patients to examination rooms, reassure them, explain procedures, answer questions, and adjust explanations, communication style, and procedures according to patient needs.
  • Explain correct procedure preparations to patients and nurses.
  • Clean and maintain ultrasound equipment, verify proper operation, report equipment malfunctions, and perform quality assurance tests.
  • Perform portable bedside examinations.
  • Train co-workers, ultrasound students, residents, fellows, and visiting personnel.
  • Participate in quality improvement activities to continuously improve services.
  • Follow safety and infection control standards.
  • Complete required paperwork and perform computer functions including entering reports, recording completed procedures, logging studies, and ordering procedures.
  • Adhere to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguard University assets.
Desired Qualifications
  • One (1) year of relevant experience is preferred.
