About the company

Rula runs an online mental health practice that matches people across the US with licensed therapists and psychiatric clinicians who take their health insurance. Its network covers all 50 states and Washington, D.C., and treats individuals, couples, families, children and teens, with psychiatry and medication management alongside therapy. Patients search by need, specialty and insurance plan, book a clinician, and meet by video or, in some areas, in person. Rula is in network with many national and regional health plans, so patients pay their usual copay while Rula bills the insurer for each visit. Rula was founded in 2019 and is based in Los Angeles.

What believers are saying

  • Pay isn't cut by location: Rula posts national bands, such as $192,000 to $240,000 plus equity for staff engineers.
  • Rula is expanding in-person care: postings from August and October 2026 seek staff to open clinics and scale in-person psychiatry.
  • Engineers learn from a big-company leader: Rula hired HubSpot's former engineering SVP, Manoj Sivakumar, to run engineering in March 2026.

What critics are saying

  • A bigger rival is well funded: Grow Therapy covers 220 million insured lives and raised $150 million in March 2026.
  • Rival networks are consolidating: benefits firm Spring Health bought Alma, which helps therapists take insurance, in May 2026.
  • Bonuses are rare: 27 of Rula's 37 open roles in October 2026 state base salary only, with no bonus.

What makes Rula unique

  • Rula tracks symptoms at most visits: about 78% include a completed clinical questionnaire, versus often under 20% in routine practice.
  • Patients start fast: Rula's median wait for a first available appointment is one day, with 112,000+ open slots weekly.
  • Free employer sessions roll into insurance: Rula matches patients with therapists who accept both their employer program and health plan.
