Requirements
  • Two to three years of experience in an acute, chronic, or ambulatory care setting.
  • Completion of a Patient Care Technician course.
  • Basic Life Support certification.
  • Completion certification for Patient Care Technician phlebotomy and electrocardiogram training.
  • High school diploma or General Educational Development credential.
  • Computer knowledge.
Responsibilities
  • Establish and maintain positive, professional relationships with patients, visitors, and employees.
  • Participate in department Performance and Quality Improvement activities, including data collection, analysis, risk management, claims activities, and Continuous Quality Improvement teams.
  • Respect patient privacy and confidentiality and provide timely, appropriate patient information in accordance with Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act requirements.
  • Manage patient flow for assigned providers, monitor provider progress, identify scheduled patients, and escort patients to examination rooms using appropriate identification techniques.
  • Prepare examination rooms and patients, complete screening tools in the electronic medical record, and instruct patients to change into examination gowns when appropriate.
  • Accurately obtain and record vital signs, blood pressure, weight, and height.
  • Perform phlebotomy, finger sticks, blood glucose testing with a glucometer, and vision and hearing testing.
  • Instruct patients and obtain sputum, urine, and stool specimens.
  • Assist patients with walkers, canes, crutches, and incentive spirometers.
  • Transport patients, slips, specimens, and materials between areas.
  • Prepare and maintain work areas and assist with supply inventory.
  • Report changes in patient condition to the Registered Nurse.
  • Prepare patients for examinations and assist providers during examinations.
  • Perform simple unsterile dressings.
  • Follow fire, safety, emergency preparedness, infection control, patient safety, medical waste, equipment, alarm, code cart, and institutional logging procedures.
  • Attend mandatory education sessions and complete required competencies and HealthStream modules.
  • Identify learning needs and seek opportunities to address them.
