AutoZone guides for flat to low growth as DIY sales fall 0.6% and stock drops 22.7%

AutoZone expects flat store sales in the first quarter of fiscal 2027, and the low end of its full-year guidance is also flat. Domestic same-store sales to do-it-yourself customers fell 0.6% in the fiscal fourth quarter, while commercial sales grew 8.6%. Management said financially strained shoppers are deferring repairs and trading down. The average do-it-yourself ticket rose about 5%, but fewer transactions offset it. The operating margin slipped to 18.0% in the twelve months to May 9, 2026, from 19.6% a year earlier. The company plans to invest about $1.65 billion in fiscal 2027, mostly in new stores, after a $2 billion buyback in fiscal 2026 that topped its free cash flow of roughly $1.8 billion. Commercial sales, just under $5.8 billion in fiscal 2026, are expected to keep growing. AutoZone plans about 400 new stores and reports next in early December 2026.
