Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement efficient manufacturing processes and methods

Staff Reporter September 15, 2026 12:38 PM, EDT Key takeaways: HANNOVER, Germany - Cummins debuted its X15N heavy-duty natural gas engine in Europe on Sept. 14, marking the latest step in the Columbus, Ind.-based manufacturer's push beyond diesel powertrains. The engine maker, which has offered the X15N in North America for the past two years, showcased the natural gas-powered version of its largest truck engine at IAA Transportation, the Western world's largest truck show. Cummins has not yet opened its European order book for the X15N, and no truck manufacturers have announced plans to offer the engine to customers in the European Union, Maged Tadros, executive director of global on-highway pickup and fuel delivery systems, told Transport Topics on the sidelines of the conference. "The X15N, which fits where the 13-liter engine fits, brings proven heavy-duty natural gas technology to customers who are looking for another option that can be deployed today. It offers diesel-like performance and can operate on natural gas or biomethane, depending on the market and available infrastructure," Tadros told reporters during a briefing. Cummins also showcased its B7.2 and X10 engines to European customers for the first time at IAA. The company began testing the X15N with U.S. fleets in 2023. Early participants included Walmart and Werner Enterprises. The X15N is available with ratings up to 500 horsepower and 1,850 pound-feet of torque, allowing fleets to haul loads exceeding 80,000 pounds. Freightliner and Paccar offer the engine in North America. Industry observers viewed Freightliner's decision to make the X15N available in the Cascadia, its flagship on-highway model, as a key milestone for adoption of natural gas-powered trucks, particularly among advocates of renewable natural gas.

Cummins is set to showcase its broad technology portfolio at IAA Transportation 2026 in Hannover, Germany, at Hall 19/20, Stand 21A. Visitors will see a range of solutions, from Euro 7-ready advanced diesel and natural gas engines to hydrogen storage solutions, battery-electric power options, and innovative powertrain technologies. Under its Many Paths Forward approach, Cummins is providing commercial vehicle manufacturers and operators with multiple solutions to meet their performance, efficiency, and decarbonization goals. 11 September 2026 By Editorial staff Cummins recognises that the transition of commercial transport will not follow a single technological path. Different country regulations, vehicle applications, duty cycles, infrastructure conditions and operational requirements call for different solutions for OEMs and fleets - and this is the principle behind Cummins' "Many Paths Forward" approach. Cummins HELM: different fuels, common platforms. At the heart of this strategy is Cummins HELM(TM), the company's range of engine platforms designed to support different fuels and applications while sharing common architectures. One of the main attractions in Hannover will be the European debut of the Cummins X15N, a 15-litre natural gas engine developed for heavy-duty applications. For the European market, the X15N delivers up to 485 kW (651 hp) and 3,000 Nm of torque. Its 250-bar architecture has undergone 40,000 hours of bench testing and five million kilometres of road trials, with Cummins targeting long-haul and other demanding heavy-duty applications. Natural gas can offer fleets an alternative where operational requirements make combustion engines particularly suitable, while also providing the opportunity to use renewable fuels such as biomethane where available. Hydrogen storage solutions will also form part of the Cummins presence at IAA through NPROXX, its specialist high-pressure hydrogen storage system. NPROXX Type 4 composite cylinders are designed for transport and mobility applications, with storage solutions including 350-bar systems for heavy-duty vehicles as well as 700-bar automotive applications and systems operating at up to 1,000 bar for infrastructure and stationary use. As part of a hybrid solution, Cummins will showcase the X10 Euro 7, the first Cummins HELM platform engine to launch in Europe. Compact and hybrid-compatible, the X10 delivers up to 335 kW (450 hp) and 2,240 Nm, combining an advanced combustion system with Cummins' High Power Density engine brake and integrated technologies designed to meet Euro 7 requirements. Together, the two engines demonstrate the central idea behind Cummins HELM: providing power solutions that can evolve with different fuels and emissions requirements while addressing the performance expected from commercial vehicles. Accelera brings battery-electric technologies to Hannover. The Many Paths Forward approach extends beyond combustion engines. Cummins will also present technologies developed for battery-electric commercial vehicles. Among them is the Advanced LFP 4T battery platform. Based on lithium iron phosphate chemistry and a long-cell architecture, the modular system can accommodate up to five tiers per pack, enabling vehicle manufacturers to adapt battery capacity to range and payload requirements. CHICAGO - In collaboration with Cummins Inc., the American Library Association (ALA) invites applications from U.S. public libraries to participate in A Year of STEM, 12 months of curated STEM programming to foster curiosity and STEM-mindedness in early childhood learners. Through a competitive, peer-reviewed application process, 25 public libraries will be selected to receive the following: * A $5,000 programming stipend to support program-related expenses, such as presenter honoraria, educational materials, field trip transportation, library staff time, marketing and publicity, STEM kit materials, program supplies and printing. * Four STEM kits, developed by librarian advisors and delivered quarterly by mail. * A copy of the A Year of STEM programming guide, featuring replicable STEM kits and program models, a STEM reading list for early learners and additional resources. * Customizable promotional templates, including posters, postcards, bookmarks, web graphics, social media graphics and other materials to support outreach. * Access to a private online discussion group in ALA Connect for conversation, peer support, and idea exchange among participating libraries. * Virtual training videos covering grant logistics and administration, programming requirements, evaluation, project goals, tips for successful STEM programming and related topics. Cummins' Brazilian engineers develop new axle for electric city buses up to 22 tonnes, targeting 2027 production. The MC-17X, designed at Cummins' 70-year-old Osasco axle operation - whose history traces back to 1956 and which only became part of Cummins through the 2022 Meritor acquisition - reinforces the rear axle to handle heavier battery packs and the reversed load forces of regenerative braking. Cummins has developed a new rear axle for urban electric buses weighing up to 22 tonnes gross vehicle weight, according to Diário do Transporte (Adamo Bazani), designed specifically for 4x2 bus configurations and expected to enter production in July 2027. Called the MC-17X, the axle is engineered to handle the mechanical changes electrification brings to a vehicle's drivetrain - chiefly, heavier battery packs and the load reversals generated during regenerative braking. The project is part of a new generation of axles developed by Cummins' Brazilian engineering team at its Osasco, São Paulo axle operation, alongside the MS-14X, aimed at electric urban delivery trucks up to 17 tonnes, and the MT-17XHE, a high-efficiency axle for conventional 6x4 trucks. Cummins has not disclosed which bus manufacturers or specific models will initially use the MC-17X. A 70-year operation, only recently part of Cummins. The Osasco site's history predates Cummins' involvement by more than six decades. It began on 16 July 1956 as Oficina de Peças para Automóveis, majority-owned by Brazilian rail-equipment maker Cobrasma with a 30% stake held by US-based Rockwell, and passed through a series of corporate identities - Cresa, Braseixos Rockwell, Braseixos, Rockwell Braseixos, Meritor (from 1997), and ArvinMeritor (2000-2011, when the operation also covered light-vehicle systems) - before reverting to the Meritor name in 2011. The site only became part of Cummins when the company completed its acquisition of Meritor globally in August 2022. According to AutoIndústria, the division has invested R$220 million over the past six years, a third of it since the Cummins integration, and Kleber Assanti, General Director of Cummins' Axle Division, said the acquisition "contributes to increasing industrial capacity and the ability to innovate." Why electrification changes what an axle needs to do. In a 4x2 configuration, the rear axle handles two demanding jobs simultaneously: transmitting traction force and supporting a large share of the vehicle's total weight. In battery-electric buses, that second job becomes more demanding, since energy-storage packs can add structural load to the axles compared with equivalent diesel vehicles. The MC-17X uses a reinforced differential, laser welding, higher-capacity bearings, new crown-and-pinion gear sets, and a cast housing developed specifically for this application; according to AutoData, the laser-welded differential also eliminates fasteners between the ring gear and differential case, reducing axle mass by roughly 20kg. Rafael Souza, Cummins' Product Director and PMO for its Axle Division, said the combination of regenerative-braking forces and increased axle loading required a full review of internal components and structural design, rather than adapting existing conventional-axle parts - a design approach Technibus reports took roughly four years of development and testing. During deceleration and energy regeneration, the electric motor operates as a generator, and components such as the crown gear, pinion, and bearings can experience loads in different directions and intensities than in conventional applications, according to Cummins. A broader family of new axles, developed in Brazil. Alongside the bus-focused MC-17X, Cummins' Brazilian engineers developed the MS-14X for 6x2 electric trucks used mainly in urban distribution, rated for vehicles up to 17 tonnes and scheduled for production from January 2027; its external architecture derives from the existing MS-120 axle, previously used in vehicles around 11 tonnes, but Cummins says nearly the entire internal assembly was redesigned, including larger bearings and reinforced crown-and-pinion components to handle regenerative-braking loads - an application-capacity increase of roughly 55%. Differential assembly for this axle will take place at Cummins' Osasco plant. Separately, Cummins is developing the MT-17XHE, a high-efficiency axle for conventional 6x4 diesel trucks, targeting production from July 2027; the company says redesigned lubrication routing, new bearing geometries and surface treatments, and improved crown-and-pinion alignment together deliver an efficiency improvement of approximately 2%, based on its development and validation testing - a company-reported figure, not an independent measurement. The platform is undergoing validation in Italy, while structural housing tests are conducted at Cummins' Mechanical Engineering Laboratory in Osasco; an unnamed partner automaker is separately evaluating integrating the component into a vehicle. Cummins estimates that for a truck covering 100,000km annually at roughly 1.8km per liter of diesel, that efficiency gain could save around 1,090 liters of fuel per year, or more than 545,000 liters annually across a 500-vehicle fleet - savings the company says depend on application, cargo weight, terrain, and operating profile. The MT-17XHE's differential uses a global platform but has a housing developed by Cummins' Brazilian engineers to account for local conditions including heavier combined weights, long distances, varied terrain, and road-surface differences found in Brazilian operations; the axle remains in the homologation phase. Manufacturing processes for the new axle family include shot peening - controlled application of small metal spheres to component surfaces - intended to improve fatigue resistance under the repeated acceleration and deceleration cycles typical of urban vehicle operation. Cummins currently expects to expand its high-efficiency axle family further between 2028 and 2030, including a planned 18XHE model for 6x2 vehicles.
