MEO and Nokia launch joint program to bring AI to telecommunications networks.

MEO and Nokia launch joint program to bring AI to telecommunications networks. The partnership between MEO and Nokia aims to test in real networks how artificial intelligence and automation can make infrastructure more adaptable and capable of operating with less human intervention. National operator MEO and Finnish Nokia announced that they will work together on an innovation program to introduce artificial intelligence and automation into real telecommunications networks. The goal is for infrastructure to have an increasingly greater capacity to decide and act on its own, based on AI resources integrated from its design. The joint collaboration program will study how AI can be used at all stages of a network's life, from its design, through operation, monitoring, and optimization. The two companies intend to develop and test concrete use cases in which the network identifies changes in its operation, predicts needs, and responds more quickly and efficiently than is currently the case. The initiative brings together MEO's operational experience, its networks, and the knowledge the operator has been building in AI with the technological experience of the Finnish manufacturer. It thus fits into MEO's artificial intelligence and innovation strategy, as well as its long-term vision for increasingly intelligent, resilient, and autonomous infrastructures. For José Pedro Nascimento, chief technology officer (CTO) of MEO, "Artificial intelligence is transforming the way communications networks are designed, operated, and experienced." The official considers that the program allows the operator "to explore new ways of building smarter, more resilient, and more efficient infrastructures," with more value for customers and a contribution to Portugal's position in the digital economy. On Nokia's side, John Harrington, senior vice president and director for Europe, states that the collaboration shows how AI "can move from the experimental phase to a concrete impact on communications networks." According to the official, working with real cases brings "tangible benefits for network performance and customer experience." Nokia launches flexible 50G/25G/10GPON solution to accelerate AI-ready fibre broadband.

Nokia launches flexible 50G/25G/10GPON solution to accelerate AI-ready fibre broadband. Oct 12, 2026 * Nokia is the first vendor with a 16-port line card solution that supports GPON, 10G, 25G and 50G PON on every port, enabling operators to evolve their networks with greater flexibility and lower risk. * Built on Nokia's Quillion chipset and multi-PON optical modules, the high-density line card unlocks mass-market deployment of fiber access speeds up to 50Gbps. * Nokia's industry-first multi-PON solution enables instant, high-performance, quantum-safe connectivity to meet the demands of the AI era, with general availability planned for 2027. Nokia today announced a new 50G/25G/10G/GPON line card that gives operators the flexibility to evolve their fiber network at their own pace and be ready for the demands of the AI era. As AI transforms how consumers, businesses and industries use networks, richer content, greater cloud interaction and growing upstream traffic are increasing requirements for capacity, low latency, security and reliability. The solution enables operators to adapt their existing fiber networks as these demands grow. Earlier line cards could limit operators to a narrower set of PON technologies, requiring them to commit capacity in advance or add hardware as market needs changed. Nokia's new multi-PON line card supports multiple generations on every port, allowing operators to introduce higher speeds when and where demand develops. Built on Nokia's in-house Quillion chip and optical PON modules, the new solution supports GPON, 10G, 25G and 50G PON on every port, together with a variety of multi-PON optical modules. This now allows operators to deploy the technology, or combination of technologies, in a flexible way that's best suited to each market, service or business case. Operators can add or change PON generations on the same port and fiber as demand evolves. The future of broadband is becoming harder to predict. AI is reshaping traffic patterns and creating new expectations for bandwidth, latency, security and reliability. At the same time, operators must make investments in next generation PON that will serve them for years to come. With our new line card, operators do not have to bet everything on a single path. They can deploy the PON technology their market needs now; add additional technologies on the same port and same fiber as the need arises; and easily mix and match PON generations to capture multiple revenue streams Maryam Chaudry, SVP & GM, Fixed Networks, Nokia 50G PON Flexible Line Card As operators prepare their networks for AI-driven applications and higher-speed broadband services, flexibility is becoming just as important as performance. Nokia's ability to support multiple PON generations on every port gives operators a practical, lower-risk path to evolve their fiber networks as demand develops. Jeff Heynen, Vice President, Broadband Access and Home Networking at Dell'Oro Group Powered by Nokia's Quillion chipset and multi-PON optical modules, the line card provides a flexible evolution path from GPON/10G to 25G and 50G PON. For example, operators can deploy 10G + 25G PON today and add 50G PON when demand accelerates. Alternatively, those planning for 10G + 50G PON can easily add 25G PON if market needs develop differently. The solution also enhances network performance, security and resilience: * Up to 4x lower upstream latency for more responsive, data-intensive applications. * Quantum-safe encryption and authentication to safeguard network and user data against emerging threats. * End-to-end resilience without a single point of failure for dependable delivery of mission-critical connectivity services.

Arelion partners with Nokia to demonstrate expanded optical spectrum and backbone capacity.

Arelion partners with Nokia to demonstrate expanded optical spectrum and backbone capacity. Oct 9, 2026 Stockholm, Sweden - Arelion today announced it has completed a live network field trial on its 500-kilometer route from Amsterdam to London using Nokia's 1830 Global Express (GX) Super C and Super L open line system, CHMQ6 thin transponder modules and ICE-X 400G and 800G ZR+ coherent pluggable optics. The field trial demonstrated how Arelion can increase the capacity and cost efficiency of its IP and optical network, helping wholesale, neoscaler and enterprise customers access scalable connectivity as they deploy AI and other bandwidth-intensive applications. Arelion demonstrated the ability to expand usable optical spectrum by approximately 21 percent with Nokia's Super C and Super L band technology, enabling greater capacity over its existing fiber infrastructure to meet customers' networking requirements. This additional capacity can support high-bandwidth services such as Arelion's Managed Optical Fiber Network (MOFN), which provides dedicated, managed optical connectivity between data centers and other digital infrastructure. Nokia's CHMQ6 thin transponder modules and ICE-X coherent pluggable optics provide a modular, lower-power approach to high-capacity optical transport, while client splitting enables more efficient use of wavelength capacity across different high-speed customer services. These capabilities help Arelion support enterprises distributing AI workloads across data centers and cloud environments, as well as growing neoscaler demand for high-capacity MOFN services. Arelion's achievement comes as AI-driven bandwidth growth accelerates the adoption of coherent optical technology. According to Cignal AI, 400ZR/ZR+ pluggable optics accounted for almost half of all telecom bandwidth deployed in 2025, with 800G pluggables expected to be the fastest-growing area for coherent interfaces in 2026. "This field trial is another milestone in our continuous network investment to support customers' escalating bandwidth requirements as they deploy AI and other next-generation technologies," said Dariusz Solowiej, VP of Networks and Operations, Arelion. "By combining expanded optical spectrum with Nokia's coherent pluggable technology, we're evaluating a more scalable and energy-efficient approach to increasing backbone capacity, helping enterprises and other bandwidth-intensive customers reliably connect data centers and cloud environments." "As an operator at the heart of the global Internet, Arelion plays a foundational role in supporting the digital infrastructure that underpins today's connected economy," said Ron Johnson, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Optical Networks, Nokia. "Pairing expanded Super C and Super L spectrum with coherent pluggable technology gives operators greater flexibility to increase fiber capacity while improving power and cost efficiency. Arelion's trial demonstrates how these technologies can help operators cost effectively scale their networks to meet evolving customer requirements while maintaining high levels of performance and resiliency." The field trial continues Arelion's investments in its #1 ranked global Internet backbone, helping enterprises, service providers and content providers access scalable, resilient connectivity services across its network.
