Requirements
  • Knowledge of welding workplace safety requirements and good working practices.
  • Demonstrable experience of heavy steel plate welding processes; a recognised apprenticeship or equivalent is preferred.
  • Understanding of engineering drawings and technical documents.
  • Understanding of quality procedures and fabrication standards.
  • Possession of a current and valid Fillet Welding Qualification Certificate under ISO 9606-1.
  • Possession of a current and valid GSFCAW Butt Welding Qualification Certificate under ISO 9606-1.
  • Ability to work independently and seek advice when necessary.
  • Ability to cooperate flexibly with other team members.
  • Ability to pass a trade test.
  • Ability to participate actively in safety activities and procedures.
  • Ability to execute work independently according to valid instructions, rules, and standards.
  • Effectiveness in identifying issues for upward reporting or investigation.
  • Ability to express ideas or facts clearly.
  • Ability to work overtime as required.
Responsibilities
  • Perform manual or machine welding of fillet and butt welds to complete structural or fabricated parts, assemblies, units, blocks, and ship structures involving heavy plate elements.
  • Work flexibly across new-build structural steel fabrication and ship repair projects in the naval, marine, and repair sectors.
  • Maintain a safe working environment and comply with specific safety procedures.
  • Read and interpret weld symbols on fabrication drawings.
  • Understand weld procedures and essential variables necessary for maintaining them.
  • Set up welding equipment, welding local exhaust ventilation systems, gas hoses, and cables.
  • Perform flat and positional welding in accordance with weld procedures and good working practice.
  • Check welds for defects.
  • Grind weld profiles as necessary.
  • Use automated welding equipment according to individual welding qualifications.
  • Complete BPSS security clearance as part of the onboarding process.
