Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree in Athletic Training or a related field is required, with 18 months of progressively responsible professional work experience in outpatient orthopedic clinical care and athletic training outreach, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Certification as an Athletic Trainer by the National Athletic Trainers’ Association Board of Certification is required upon hire.
  • New York State licensure as an athletic trainer is required upon hire.
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation certification is required upon hire.
  • The ability to call for or render care during a patient emergency is required.
  • Employees must maintain all requirements mandated by Strong Memorial Hospital / Strong Health as a condition of employment.
  • Internship-route certification in Athletic Training is required.
Responsibilities
  • Provide athletic training services to local high schools and collegiate institutions through prevention, conditioning, re-conditioning, and rehabilitation for athletic injuries in the clinic setting under physician direction and in collaboration with medical and allied health professionals.
  • Work with minimal supervision to demonstrate proficiency and competence in all aspects of the role, assist student athletic trainers as needed, maintain complete documentation, and contribute to special projects.
  • Evaluate injuries, apply first aid, coordinate referrals to medical care, communicate with parents or guardians and physicians, develop conditioning programs during recovery, instruct athletes in home rehabilitation, and teach functional progression for return to participation.
  • Instruct athletes, parents or guardians, and coaches on conditioning, weight control, diet, injury prevention and care; educate coaches on performance-enhancement procedures; teach student athletic trainers first-aid protocols and record-keeping; and conduct in-service programs for coaching staff.
  • Evaluate prior injuries, develop and teach injury-prevention programs, evaluate injury rates and causes, recommend changes to sports techniques or practice procedures, and educate coaches and student athletic trainers on approved procedures.
  • Maintain inventory and assist with ordering supplies.
  • Document patients’ progress and response to treatment in the medical record.
  • Evaluate patients’ functional status and abilities or disabilities for sports participation, apply or direct functional measures and tests, and plan treatment based on the physician’s diagnosis, prognosis, and orders.
  • Determine rehabilitation types and frequencies and communicate care-plan options to patients.
  • Obtain supporting information from family members, physicians, nursing staff, and other sources.
  • Communicate with physicians and other involved professionals and recommend modifications to treatment programs as needed.
  • Assist patients through the call-bell system, provide range-of-motion exercises according to the plan of care, assist with transfers, teach safe transfer techniques, and safely select and use transfer equipment under the direction of a registered nurse.
  • Collaborate with the care team to meet patient mobilization needs, promote functional gains through instruction and supervision, and participate in creating mobility plans.
  • Ensure patient safety by maintaining safety equipment, following hospital safety policies and procedures, reporting hazards, continuously observing assigned patients, and caring for patients across age groups.
  • Participate in departmental meetings and clinical continuing-education programs, read professional articles and journals, attend continuing-education courses, and participate in professional meetings and seminars.
  • Support orthopedic sports physicians in clinic through documentation, taking histories, performing examinations, and discussing exercise progression with patients.
  • Assist in the ambulatory surgery center with patient-care education and post-operative exercise guidelines.
  • Evaluate and physically test workplace-health clients to develop exercise programs for injury prevention and health maintenance.
  • Assist with sports-performance programs, including performance training, active release technique, and group exercise classes.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Desired Qualifications
  • A dual focus in Exercise Science and Business Administration is preferred.
  • Five years of relevant experience, including supervisory experience, is preferred.
  • A master's degree in Athletic Training or a related field is preferred.
  • One year dedicated to the URMC Sports Medicine Department is preferred for Band III status.
  • Two years dedicated to the URMC Sports Medicine Department is preferred for Senior status.
