UK accountancy and advisory firm Shaw Gibbs has secured investment from mid-market private equity firm ECI Partners, marking the next phase of its growth strategy and a full exit for existing investor Apiary Capital. Since Apiary invested in the business in 2022, Shaw Gibbs has completed 14 acquisitions and expanded its workforce from around 100 employees to more than 800. Recent acquisitions, including Alliotts, Martin and Company and Crowleys DFK in Ireland, have strengthened the group's regional presence as it seeks to combine local client relationships with a generational platform. Shaw Gibbs provides accounting, tax, audit and advisory services to private individuals, entrepreneurial businesses, public sector and non-profit organisations and international groups. The firm currently serves around 25,000 clients. The business said its employee proposition, including training and development programmes, has supported growth and employee retention. ECI said it was attracted to the firm's client-focused approach, range of services and track record of integrating acquisitions. The private equity group will support the management team through its next phase of growth, with the business having transformed significantly since its initial investment in workforce and technology. Peter O'Connell, chief executive of Shaw Gibbs, said: "With Apiary Capital's support, we have built a market-leading accountancy firm and I am excited to partner with ECI for this next stage of our growth. They understand our focus on culture and clients and offer hands-on support for continuing to invest in the team and innovation through technology, which will support further sustainable growth. This is an important milestone for Shaw Gibbs, and I'd like to take this opportunity to thank the whole team." Fran Kidd, associate director, Clients and Markets, Shaw Gibbs told Accountancy Today: "ECI's partnership will give Accountancy Group additional support and capability as Accountancy Group continue to invest in its people, its technology, its client offering and its ability and focus on bringing high-quality firms into the Group. It is not about changing who Accountancy Group is; it is about giving Accountancy Group the platform, backing and confidence to keep building on the qualities that have made Shaw Gibbs successful. "As we move forward with ECI, our priorities remain the same: delivering exceptional service to clients, creating fulfilling careers for our people, preserving the entrepreneurial and collaborative culture that sets us apart, and continuing to grow sustainably and responsibly." Michael Butler, partner at ECI, said: "Shaw Gibbs stood out to us as one of the most client-centric businesses in the accountancy space, with the platform to scale their consistently high-quality service. Their breadth of offering, culture and employee proposition, on top of a track record of integrating high-quality businesses, gives them an excellent platform for further growth. We're excited to work with the management team to deliver on that opportunity together." Chris Heawood, partner at Apiary Capital, said: "We are incredibly proud to have been a part of Shaw Gibbs' journey following our initial investment almost four years ago. Since then, Peter and the wider leadership team have transformed the business, growing the team from 100 to over 800 people, while retaining a dynamic and collaborative culture and continuing to deliver exceptional client service. We look forward to following Shaw Gibbs' continuing growth story under ECI ownership." Published: 5h ago
