Requirements
  • Knowledge of basic grammar and mathematical principles normally acquired through a high school education, with additional training or working knowledge of related business.
  • Two years of experience working in hospital service access, clinical service access, a physician office, or billing and collections; alternatively, an associate's degree in a healthcare-related field and one year of experience working with the public, or a bachelor's degree and one year of experience working with the public.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to analyze data, perform multiple tasks, and work independently.
  • Ability to develop and maintain a professional, service-oriented working relationship.
  • Ability to understand and comply with policies and procedures.
  • Working knowledge of compliance principles.
Responsibilities
  • Accurately complete patient accounts according to departmental protocols, policies and procedures, and regulatory requirements, including pre-admission, admission, pre-registration, and registration functions.
  • Ensure insurance requirements are met before patient arrival and inform patients of their financial liability before services are provided.
  • Arrange payment options with patients and screen patients for government funding sources.
  • Analyze insurance coverage and benefits for services.
  • Obtain authorizations based on insurance plan contracts and guidelines.
  • Document information in the billing system.
  • Explain bills and provide assistance to visitors and patients.
  • Explain policies and departmental coverage as requested.
  • Calculate patient financial responsibilities according to PRMO credit and collection policies.
  • Collect cash payments appropriately from patients.
  • Reconcile third-party sponsorship requirements and process patients according to reimbursement procedures.
  • Obtain prior authorization certifications and other authorizations as appropriate.
  • Facilitate payment sources for uninsured patients.
  • Determine whether a patient's condition resulted from an accident and research the appropriate source of liability or payment.
  • Admit, register, and pre-register patients using accurate demographic and financial data.
  • Resolve insurance claim rejections and denials and remedy them promptly.
  • Evaluate diagnoses for compliance with the Local Medicare Review Policy.
  • Process accounts accurately and efficiently.
  • Compile departmental statistics for budgetary and reporting purposes.
  • Assist financially responsible persons with arranging payments and collection actions.
  • Make referrals for financial counseling.
  • Examine insurance policies and third-party sponsorship materials to identify sources of payment.
  • Inform the attending physician of patient financial hardship.
  • Complete managed care waiver forms for out-of-network patients receiving services at a reduced benefit level.
  • Update the billing system to reflect the patient's insurance status.
  • Refer patients to manufacturer drug programs as needed for medications.
  • Greet patients and visitors, follow procedures, and resolve problems.
  • Gather documentation to support the proper handling of inquiries and complaints.
  • Enter and update referrals as required.
  • Communicate with insurance carriers regarding requested clinical information and resolve coverage issues.
