Requirements
  • Graduate of a Medical Imaging Program.
  • Obtain Radiography certification through the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists or Nuclear Medicine Technologist certification through the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board within six months of hire.
  • Possess a current or temporary radiography license as required by the state board where services will be provided; Maryland requires a Radiographer license through the Maryland Board of Physicians, Ohio requires a Radiographer license through the Ohio Board of Radiology, Pennsylvania requires no state license, and West Virginia requires a Radiography license or Nuclear Medicine and Diagnostic CT license through the West Virginia Medical Imaging and Radiation Therapy Technology Board.
  • Obtain Basic Life Support certification within 30 days of hire.
  • Complete state criminal background checks and federal background checks, if applicable, as required for regulated areas.
  • Be able to perform frequent walking, standing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and feeling throughout the work shift.
  • Be able to lift, move, and position patients of all weights with varying amounts of assistance, including exerting more than 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds frequently, and up to 20 pounds constantly.
  • Have hearing and visual acuity within the normal range.
  • Knowledge of growth and development, patient needs, and scope of treatment.
  • Understand each patient’s biophysical, biopsychosocial, environmental, self-care, educational, spiritual, cultural, ethical, and discharge-planning needs.
  • Knowledge of total patient care for patients whose disease is not responsive to curative treatment, focusing on pain and symptom control.
Responsibilities
  • Perform diagnostic computed tomography procedures within the computed tomography department using designated equipment.
  • Rotate through diagnostic radiology assignments as needed.
  • Practice radiation and general safety at all times.
  • Prepare rooms, equipment, and materials for patient examinations, including sterile technique.
  • Clean and disinfect rooms and equipment after each patient examination according to current infection-control policies.
  • Perform examinations according to physician orders and explain procedures to patients.
  • Document protocol variations caused by a patient’s condition or another unknown cause, and relay patient history and clinical data to the radiologist.
  • Observe patients and equipment, report unusual occurrences or changes, and transport and assist patients as needed.
  • Document patient status related to radiology and computed tomography procedures in the patient chart.
  • Document variances, repeats, and other occurrences to support quality improvement.
  • Maintain supply stock, perform general office duties, label films properly, and follow prescribed techniques to ensure acceptable quality and consistency.
  • Practice safe radiation exposure and protection for patients, visitors, and staff.
  • Comply with departmental and hospital-wide policies and procedures.
  • Participate in patient-safety training and patient-protection activities, including methods for reporting medical or healthcare errors and abuse.
  • Produce diagnostic-quality images using computed tomography equipment and judge images for proper technique to demonstrate anatomy and pathology.
  • Perform critical procedures under stress during emergencies.
  • When applicable, perform diagnostic studies with mobile radiographic equipment in emergency or patient rooms as ordered by a physician.
  • Perform diagnostic studies in the surgical suite using a C-arm and other equipment.
  • Provide care for neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.
  • Perform intravenous insertion and blood draws when applicable.
  • Administer intravenous, oral, and rectal contrast for computed tomography imaging according to radiologist protocol, the department manual, and the ordering physician or care-provider order.
  • Use picture archiving and communication systems to ensure examinations are completed and available for radiologist interpretation and referring-provider review.
  • Perform related duties assigned by the department manager or lead technologist.
  • Complete annual education related to specialty accreditation requirements through computer-based learning, training, in-service education, and competency validation when applicable.
  • Work the evening shift Monday through Friday from 4:00 p.m. to 12:30 a.m.
  • Participate in weekend and holiday rotation.
  • Adjust shifts as needed to meet department staffing needs.
