Requirements
  • Be at least 21 years of age.
  • Have a high school diploma or general equivalency diploma.
  • Have a valid Texas driver's license with a good driving record.
  • Be able to work in close contact with children ages 10–16, including physically, emotionally disturbed, and/or violent children.
  • Have basic typing proficiency and fundamental computer skills.
  • Communicate fluently in English, speak clearly, and listen effectively.
  • Be able to physically restrain an out-of-control juvenile using the department's approved personal restraint technique.
  • Have no disqualifying criminal history.
  • Obtain and maintain current CPR, First Aid, and approved physical restraint training certifications.
  • Complete 80 hours of approved in-hire training within the first six months of employment and 80 hours of training every two years thereafter.
  • Maintain documentation of all completed training.
  • Be able to work shifts of 6 AM–2 PM or 2 PM–10 PM with rotating days off.
Responsibilities
  • Maintain safety and continuous security by following established guidelines and procedures.
  • Provide care, custody, and control of juveniles assigned to Juvenile Justice Department programs, including guidance, crisis intervention, and redirection related to conduct, attitudes, and relationships.
  • Guide delinquent participants toward positive behavior through approved therapeutic approaches, education, self-discipline, responsibility, and respect for authority, themselves, and the community.
  • Provide disciplinary support to school personnel when juveniles exhibit disruptive behavior.
  • Prepare detailed reports and submit them to supervisors daily.
  • Admit, process, and orient newly admitted juveniles to their assigned programs, including advising them on rules and discipline requirements.
  • Participate with juveniles in therapeutic, physical, athletic, cleaning, and recreational activities.
  • Conduct physical fitness activities and teach close-order drills as required.
  • Attend required staff meetings.
  • Physically restrain out-of-control juveniles using approved techniques.
Desired Qualifications
  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in criminology, corrections, social work, psychology, sociology, or a related field.
  • At least one year of full-time experience in casework, corrections, or a juvenile agency working with offenders, disadvantaged individuals, or emotionally disturbed and/or violent youth.
  • Honorably discharged U.S. military service may be considered applicable experience.
