Western Union selects noah to power global stablecoin payments network. October 21, 2026 05:34 ET | Source: Noah * Ushers in new era for international payments * Enables seamless movement of money across 200 countries & territories * Cuts delays and slashes costs of international remittances DENVER and LONDON, Oct. 21, 2026 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) - Noah, the stablecoin payments infrastructure provider, has been selected by The Western Union Company (NYSE: WU), the world's largest international money transfer and retail remittance network, to power a global platform for the transfer of funds between fiat currencies via rapid and low-cost stablecoin infrastructure. The Noah stablecoin infrastructure will provide the underlying on-chain banking network for Western Union's Receiver Redirect service. The service will enable stablecoin transfers in over 60 currencies across more than 200 countries and territories. The global stablecoin service will support Western Union's 150-plus million customers by cutting the time and cost of making international money transfers. The new stablecoin payments service is based on Western Union's USDPT(TM), a US dollar stablecoin that is issued by Anchorage Digital Bank on Solana, and uses Noah's infrastructure to enable seamless cash transfers. The Receiver Redirect stablecoin service will enable consumers to use Western Union's half a million-plus agent locations worldwide to send funds as USDPT(TM) to almost anywhere on the globe with recipients collecting the stablecoins into a Western Union wallet. Users will be able to hold USDPT(TM) stablecoin assets indefinitely using Western Union's Stablecard that was announced in August 2026. "The international movement of money through traditional banks is slow, expensive and no longer fit for purpose. Stablecoin opens up a new, faster and cheaper way to move funds globally. Western Union is not just one of the world's leading money transfer companies, but a visionary in its early adoption of stablecoin. This is a watershed moment for the future of stablecoin and sends a real signal the market has shifted. We're proud to provide the banking infrastructure behind Receiver Redirect, and to power the next era of international remittances for Western Union," said Shah Ramezani, Founder and CEO, Noah. Noah's stablecoin banking infrastructure will provide Western Union with the treasury and licensing required to pre-fund, convert, and disperse USDPTTM to recipients. It will also ensure local regulatory compliance through adherence to stablecoin rails for all transfers. "Customers increasingly want greater flexibility in how they receive, hold and use money," said Malcolm Clarke, Global Head Digital Assets, Western Union. "This new capability is a global first, taking a Western Union money transfer and delivering it directly into the customers' stablecard wallet in USDPTTM stablecoin, creating a seamless connection between our global money movement network and our digital asset ecosystem." Four-minute transfers are revolutionizing the way money circulates around the world. Stablecoins enable faster international transfers and can reduce costs, putting pressure on giants such as Western Union and MoneyGram, which are now launching their own stablecoins to compete. By Katherine Schwartz - María Clara Cobo October 19, 2026 | 01:26 PM Bloomberg - The main problem facing money transfer companies such as Western Union Co. (WU) and MoneyGram International Inc. can be summed up in two figures: four minutes and 3 days. According to Brendan Tonks, a 44-year-old plumber from South Sydney, that was the time it took him to send money to his family in the Philippines after switching to stablecoins, compared with his previous experience with Western Union a couple of years ago. He says his first transfer using this new method also cost him only a small fraction of what he had paid through the traditional service. Currently, the giants of the remittance industry are incorporating that same cryptocurrency technology to safeguard their businesses and strengthen ties with their customers. Both companies have launched their own dollar-backed stablecoins, digital tokens designed to maintain a stable value against fiat currencies such as the U.S. dollar, and are expanding into digital wallets and cards. They aim to get customers to do more than a simple transfer, turning one-off transactions into a broader financial relationship that keeps funds on their platforms. This shift highlights the extent to which the adoption of stablecoins has revolutionized the traditional money transfer business, as well as the inroads that cryptocurrency-based business models have made into real-world finance. Western Union, founded in 1851, pioneered the creation of the first telegraph network in the U.S. Today, its shares trade near their all-time low, after having plunged 70% in just the last 5 years. MoneyGram, a private company, is also showing signs of financial distress; this Friday, one of its loans was trading at around 71 cents on the dollar. Tonks's experience is just one example. Western Union and MoneyGram already allow their customers to send money digitally, sometimes at lower costs and faster speeds than he experienced, depending on the country and payment method. Western Union says bank transfers can take from a few minutes to five business days, while the World Bank put the average cost of a digital remittance at 4.59% in the third quarter of 2025. Stablecoin transfers can settle more quickly, although recipients may still have to pay fees when converting them into local currency. Western Union declined to verify the details of Tonks's transaction, arguing that fees and delivery times depend on factors such as the countries involved, payment methods and the amount sent. "Customers are informed of applicable fees and estimated delivery times before completing a transaction," a Western Union spokesperson said. The use of stablecoins is growing rapidly. Stablecoin payments totaled at least US$401 billion during the first eight months of 2026, an increase of 42% compared with the previous year, according to consultancy Alvarez & Marsal. Western Union launched its USDPT stablecoin in May and later partnered with financial technology company Rain to develop a digital wallet and a card. MoneyGram followed with MGUSD and a card launched in Colombia, which has since expanded to El Salvador, with plans to roll it out more widely across Latin America. "They don't say they want stablecoins. What they want is the functionality of being able to store funds in a stable currency like the U.S. dollar," explained Anthony Soohoo, CEO of MoneyGram. MoneyGram already uses stablecoins in its foreign exchange operations and is on track to conduct transactions worth about US$3 billion a year through them, according to a company spokesperson. Western Union sees special potential for stablecoins in markets where access to traditional financial services is more difficult. "We believe the greatest benefit could come in markets where customers face difficulties related to financial access, cross-border payments or currency volatility," said Malcolm Clarke, Western Union's global head of digital assets. MoneyGram's financial pressure has been exacerbated by concerns about the Trump administration's immigration crackdown, which could negatively affect remittances to the U.S. A loan from the company with an outstanding balance of US$388 million, which was trading near its face value when Trump took office, fell to 57 cents on the dollar in February as the immigration crackdown intensified. Western Union's retail business depends heavily on the most recently arrived immigrants, who are attracted by its physical offices, its ability to handle cash and its well-known brand, making the company especially vulnerable to changes in migration patterns. "New migration is the lifeblood of our retail business," said Chief Financial Officer Matt Cagwin during an earnings conference on July 30. Digital competitors are also taking customers away from traditional providers. Monthly active users of Western Union's app fell 10% in September compared with 2025, while those of MoneyGram fell 9%, according to Sensor Tower data. Wise Group Plc.'s active users rose 9%. Downloads fell 2% for Western Union and 10% for MoneyGram, while Wise's rose 13%. However, new technologies do not necessarily mean customers will quickly change their habits. Ismail Ahmed, founder of money transfer company WorldRemit and current director of financial app Odola, said the remittance industry has repeatedly witnessed how technology advances faster than consumer behavior. "Remittances have a history of overestimating digitalization," Ahmed said. "Even years after digitalization, most transactions through Western Union are still done in cash." Even so, cross-border stablecoin volume soared 64% to US$135 billion in 2025, according to Alvarez & Marsal. For traditional remittance companies, that growth poses a threat to a long-standing source of revenue. Global remittance fees have remained above 6% for almost a decade, according to Kumanan Ramanathan, managing director and co-head of cryptocurrency at Alvarez & Marsal. "That is the margin that is now under pressure, and it is one of the main reasons why some large remittance institutions want to control the entire infrastructure," Ramanathan explained. Stablecoins are not necessarily cheaper from start to finish. MoneyGram and Western Union say that controlling a larger part of the process themselves can reduce the costs of moving money to and from stablecoins. "If transactions are made within the network itself, there is no need to use a different stablecoin," said Soohoo of MoneyGram. "By developing it within our own infrastructure, we achieve faster settlement and manage the economics ourselves to offer a lower cost and a better experience to our customers." This strategy carries risks. If Western Union and MoneyGram promote their own stablecoins while customers continue to use already established alternatives, the market could become increasingly fragmented. "The challenge is that, suddenly, you have hundreds of stablecoins, and if there is a lack of interoperability among them, you will have created the same problem we have traditionally had," said Paul Bances, strategic advisor at TGB Advisory Group, who previously held positions at PayPal Holdings Inc. (PYPL) and MoneyGram. Creating their own stablecoins does not necessarily solve another problem: convincing customers who have already left to come back. Patrick Kilgannon, a 59-year-old HVAC specialist from Florida who sends money to his family in Guatemala, uses Coinbase (COIN) to send USDC, the dollar-backed stablecoin. Western Union's new stablecoin card caught his attention, but not enough to make him decide to switch. "I stopped using Western Union because fees ate into every transfer, and I would need to know what they actually charge before going back," Kilgannon said. "Right now, Coinbase and USDC do exactly what I need them to do." With assistance from Maya Averbuch. Read more at Bloomberg.com
Saudi super-app barq to absorb Bahrain's Beyon Money, gaining its licences. The telecoms group's wallet will become part of barq, which says the deal is about Beyon Money's regulatory licences. No terms were disclosed. Rudri Mehta Kachhy PAYMENTS CORRESPONDENT barq, the Saudi payments app that became a unicorn last month, has agreed to take over Beyon Money, the digital wallet owned by Bahraini telecoms group Beyon, mainly to get its licences. Beyon Money's operations will become part of barq, and Beyon will keep an economic interest in barq, the companies said on 7 October. The agreement was signed at the FinTech Forward 2026 conference in Bahrain. Neither side disclosed a price or the size of Beyon's stake. The deal still depends on final documentation, regulatory approvals and customary closing conditions. Beyon Money customers can keep using their accounts as normal. Buying a regulatory base. Mohamed Alsabea, barq's chief of staff and chief strategy officer, was direct about the reason. "Beyon Money's licences give us a regulated foundation to build on in new markets, the deal marks an important step in barq's growth." Beyon Money launched in January 2022, operating through three entities regulated by the Central Bank of Bahrain: Batelco Financial Services, Batelco Remittance Services and Beyon Money Investments. In May 2023 the central bank granted it a Class 2 investment licence. Its app covers payments, transfers and remittances, and in January 2026 its business wallet was integrated with EazyPay's point-of-sale terminals in Bahrain. Beyon has not published Beyon Money's current customer numbers. In 2023 it said customers had grown tenfold in a year. Shaikh Mohamed bin Khalifa Al Khalifa, chief executive of Beyon Digital Growth, said: "Beyon Money is a strong example of how we build and develop digital businesses with the potential to create long-term value." barq raised a $329.5 million Series A at a $1.85 billion valuation in September, the largest fintech deal in the Middle East and North Africa in the third quarter, according to Wamda. It says it has more than 15 million users and has processed more than SAR 440 billion ($117 billion) in transactions. It said the money would fund international expansion but didn't name markets. Its cross-border work so far has been through partners rather than licences of its own. barq has integrated with Western Union for international money transfers and partnered with Alipay+ in May 2026 to accept cross-border QR code payments. Owning Beyon Money would give it a licensed business of its own outside Saudi Arabia. The Beyon Money deal is the first sign of where that could start. Neither company has said which licences will transfer, whether the Central Bank of Bahrain must approve the change of control, or when they expect the deal to close.
VPBank and Western Union enhance digital remittance experience. VPBank and Western Union launched the APN Realtime service on October 12, enabling recipients in Vietnam to receive remittances directly into their bank accounts in real time, without having to visit a physical location to collect cash. Developed as part of the partnership between the two parties, the service addresses the growing demand for international money transfers that are faster, more convenient and offer greater flexibility in managing financial transactions. Compared with traditional cash collection at transaction points, APN (Account Payout Network) Realtime significantly streamlines the journey of remittances from overseas to Vietnam. The entire process is handled digitally in real time, allowing funds to be credited to recipients' accounts almost immediately after senders complete their transactions. Recipients no longer need to visit a bank counter or rely on banking hours. | Image courtesy of VPBank | In particular, the service operates 24/7, including weekends and public holidays, meeting the need to receive money at any time. Recipients are not charged any fees and face no limit on the number of remittance transactions they can receive. By transferring funds directly into bank accounts, the service also delivers a more seamless financial experience, enabling customers to make payments, spend or continue managing their cash flow through digital banking platforms without having to convert the funds into cash. "Every remittance transaction is linked to practical needs in daily life and financial plans. Recipients therefore care not only about whether the money arrives safely, but also expect the process to be fast and secure. Launching the APN Realtime service for receiving Western Union remittances is how we respond to these needs, while helping bring remittance services in Vietnam closer to international transaction standards," a VPBank representative said. Bringing the world closer with a single tap Vietnam received approximately $16 billion in remittances in 2024, with the figure continuing to rise to $17.7 billion in 2025. These figures highlight the sustained scale of cross-border money transfers and underscore growing expectations for speed, convenience and flexibility in receiving funds. For customers, the value of this connection goes beyond shorter waiting times. When remittances are transferred directly into bank accounts, recipients can continue to access payment, savings, investment and financial management services on a single platform, rather than having to convert the funds into cash first. By combining Western Union's global money transfer network spanning more than 200 countries and territories with VPBank's technological capabilities and advanced digital banking infrastructure, the message 'halfway around the world, connected with just one tap' captures the experience the two parties aim to deliver. Geographical distance is no longer a barrier as technology enables money sent from overseas to reach loved ones in Vietnam more quickly and conveniently. The APN Realtime remittance service also marks a concrete step in VPBank's efforts to realise its vision of 'Shaping the Future of Digital Remittances'. By leveraging technology to shorten processing times and simplify the receiving process, VPBank continues to reinforce its pioneering role in the digitalisation of financial services, helping deliver banking experiences that are faster, more convenient and increasingly seamless for customers.
