About the company

Whataburger runs a quick-service restaurant chain serving made-to-order burgers, chicken, breakfast and other meals to guests across the South and beyond. Its signature burgers use never-frozen beef on toasted five-inch buns, with toppings such as jalapenos, extra bacon and pickles made to order; most restaurants operate around the clock, 364 days a year. The company sells meals through its restaurants, drive-throughs, curbside pickup, delivery and online ordering, while original-recipe sauces and other foods also reach grocery shelves across the United States. Founded in Corpus Christi in 1950, Whataburger moved its home office to San Antonio, Texas, in 2009.

What believers are saying

  • Whataburger maps Team Member advancement to Area Manager through its four-stage Restaurant Career Development Path.
  • Whataburger Family Foundation scholarships are available to employees and their dependents, easing college costs for workers.
  • Whataburger earned its first Great Place To Work certification in September 2026, based entirely on employee feedback.

What critics are saying

  • Franchise locations are independently operated, so applicants must identify the employer; In-N-Out says none of its units are franchised.
  • BDT Capital's 2019 majority stake leaves Whataburger privately held, limiting public financial visibility for job seekers.
  • Overnight work is part of Whataburger's hiring mix: its live board lists part-time overnight Team Member roles.

What makes Whataburger unique

  • Whataburger's Modern A-Frame paired larger dining rooms with improved drive-through service when introduced in 1974.
  • Unlike In-N-Out, Whataburger launched franchising in 1953 when Joe Andrews Sr. opened location No. 5.
  • Whataburger's Museum of Art publishes fan-created work on Instagram, a brand-community program beyond the restaurant.
