Requirements
  • High school graduation or GED equivalent and being at least 18 years of age.
  • Completion of the learning program with an 80% passing score on the written and skills performance examination.
  • Basic Life Support HealthCare Provider certification from the American Heart Association.
  • Ability to perform prolonged standing and walking and to lift, position, push, and transfer patients and supplies or equipment, including loads of 100 pounds or more.
  • Ability to work irregular hours, respond to emergency-care situations, and manage multiple competing demands.
  • Ability to work safely with exposure to blood-borne diseases, tuberculosis, patients in varied circumstances, and unpleasant elements associated with accidents, injuries, and illness.
Responsibilities
  • Carry out patients’ plans of care for physical needs under the direction of the Registered Nurse.
  • Provide bedside patient care using aseptic technique, medical terminology, and patient-care equipment.
  • Assist nurses and physicians with procedures and safely operate equipment used in patient care.
  • Retrieve patient-care items and follow up on patient-care needs.
  • Complete unit clerical duties, including coordinating designated unit activities, transcribing orders, maintaining medical records, and serving as a unit receptionist.
  • Prepare rooms before admissions and after discharges and complete patients’ belongings lists during admission and transfer.
  • Respond to the needs of patients, families, and visitors and perform purposeful rounding.
  • Perform service recovery activities and refer unusual problems to the Nurse Manager or designee.
  • Check meals after dietary trays are delivered, address incorrect or late trays, and feed or set up trays as needed.
  • Maintain supplies and equipment and notify appropriate departments when cleaning, maintenance, dietary, or other support is needed.
  • Apply restraints safely, monitor circulation, skin integrity, breathing, positioning, range of motion, skin care, toileting, hydration, and socialization needs.
  • Operate cardiac monitors, including switches, alarms, obtaining strips, and lead placement.
  • Perform point-of-care testing, obtain vital signs, measure abdominal girth, weigh patients, and measure intake and output.
  • Apply pneumatic air stockings and TED hose and ambulate, turn, and position patients.
  • Assist with incentive spirometry and coughing or deep-breathing exercises; set up oxygen therapy; monitor pulse oximetry; perform tracheostomy care and oral or stable-patient tracheal suctioning.
  • Place patients on specialty beds, perform sterile and clean dressing changes, and provide pin-site care and traction monitoring after Registered Nurse assessment.
  • Administer enemas, perform straight catheterization, and provide catheter care.
  • Provide hygiene, grooming, mouth care, fresh water, perineal care, and toileting.
  • Collect urine, sputum, blood by venipuncture, and stool specimens, including specified urine tests.
  • Answer unit phones, provide directions, notify physicians and nursing staff of arrivals, receive articles, and manage pneumatic-tube carriers.
  • Prepare daily worksheets, confirm appointments, and maintain census information.
  • Notify Admitting of transfers, discharges, admissions, room changes, and deaths and complete related paperwork.
  • Inform staff and managers of unit activities, assist with specimen labels and requisitions, and report critical laboratory values.
  • Complete preoperative checklist and admission data-screen activities.
  • Assist with transfer and discharge paperwork, including movement of medications.
  • Give change-of-shift reports and check patient charts and physician orders for stat, flagged, timed, unsigned, and telephone orders.
  • Enter, transcribe, flag, fax, sign, and route physician orders and medication orders accurately, including during computer downtime.
  • Initiate and maintain patient charts, coordinate old-chart retrieval, complete medical-record checklists, and send records to Medical Records or with transferring patients.
  • Post allergy and isolation cards and complete the secretarial portion of death summaries.
  • Follow safety and infection-control policies, including standard precautions and hazardous-waste disposal.
  • Maintain a safe, clean, comfortable, therapeutic, and clutter-free environment and report risk-management concerns.
  • Complete annual mandatory requirements, training, competencies, and assigned coursework.
  • Obtain reports from Registered Nurses, communicate patient-condition changes and complaints, document care, identify problems, gather data, suggest solutions, and work through appropriate lines of authority.
  • Empty soiled-linen containers and work in a constant state of alertness and safety.
  • Deliver timely, respectful, high-quality patient care; respond promptly to call lights; explain procedures and education; maintain confidentiality; collaborate with staff and departments; use resources wisely; and support efficient practices.
  • Participate in staff meetings, mandatory in-services, educational programs, self-performance evaluation, nursing-unit goals, performance-improvement activities, research activities, and unit committees.
  • Provide age-appropriate care by applying knowledge of growth and development, interpreting age-specific data, communicating with patients and families, involving families in decisions, and meeting the needs of assigned patient populations.
  • Provide specialized care for high-risk patients, including restraint care, pain-management support, and abuse or neglect recognition and reporting.
  • Maintain infection-control practices, hand hygiene, isolation procedures, dressing changes, invasive-line care, vaccination compliance, crisis-response safety, and safe patient transport.
  • Contribute to patient-care-team functioning, maintain thorough documentation, model practice excellence for new employees, and complete licensure, certification, and mandatory requirements on time.
  • Maintain equipment and organized work areas, provide handoff reports, communicate patient concerns, and respond promptly to patient requests.
  • Introduce oneself to patients and families, explain care and expectations, protect privacy and modesty, and discuss the plan of care, procedures, tests, medications, and monitoring equipment.

  • Other resuscitation certifications may be required depending on the department.
