About the job

Requirements
  • A PhD (preferred) or Master's degree in Computer Science, Machine Learning, NLP, or a related field is required.
  • At least 9 years of hands-on experience in applied machine learning and deep learning, including significant hands-on work in natural language processing and generative models at scale.
  • Demonstrated experience fine-tuning large language models using LoRA or other parameter-efficient methods.
  • Experience with knowledge distillation, model compression, or training smaller models from larger teacher models.
  • Hands-on experience using large language models for pseudo-labeling and synthetic data generation to create high-quality training datasets.
  • Experience building and evaluating large-language-model-based agents, including tool use, multi-agent orchestration, and reasoning workflows.
  • Deep understanding of transformer architectures, including encoder-only, decoder-only, and encoder-decoder architectures, and modern generative transformer techniques.
  • Experience designing evaluation frameworks for generative systems, including prompt-based evaluation, large language model-as-a-judge approaches, and automated output validation.
  • Hands-on experience incorporating AI pair-programming tools such as GitHub Copilot or Cursor, or large language model workbench environments, into daily developer and research workflows.
  • Proficiency in Python and deep learning frameworks such as PyTorch or TensorFlow, along with Hugging Face tooling.
  • Experience building scalable data pipelines and training workflows for large datasets.
  • Strong experimental rigor and ability to translate research ideas into production-ready systems.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to operate effectively in cross-functional, fast-moving environments.
Responsibilities
  • Drive the research strategy and development of deep learning and generative AI models tailored for large-scale email and communication data.
  • Define and advance approaches for fine-tuning and adapting open-source foundation models using parameter-efficient techniques such as LoRA and adapters, and quantization-aware training.
  • Design and implement knowledge distillation to transfer complex capabilities into smaller, high-performance models operating under strict latency budgets.
  • Establish and standardize robust evaluation frameworks, including large language model-as-a-judge methodologies, synthetic evaluation datasets, and human-in-the-loop validation.
  • Build repeatable, scalable training and evaluation workflows for high-throughput production environments.
  • Integrate AI pair-programming tools such as Copilot and Cursor and automated large language model workflows to accelerate experimental iteration, code generation, and research prototyping.
  • Set technical direction for agent-based systems, tool-use paradigms, and long-term generative AI roadmaps.
  • Guide researchers, shape organization-wide AI technical strategy, and establish best practices for model validation.
  • Adhere to Yahoo policies, exercise sound judgment, work effectively, safely, and inclusively with others, exhibit trustworthiness and meet expectations, and safeguard business operations and brand integrity.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience with large-scale distributed training and inference.
  • Experience building, deploying, and optimizing models for on-device or resource-constrained environments, including quantization, pruning, and distillation.
  • Experience with agent frameworks, tool use, or multi-step reasoning systems.
  • Familiarity with prompt engineering, preference optimization such as RLHF or DPO, or model alignment techniques.
  • Publications, patents, or open-source contributions in natural language processing or generative AI.
  • Experience working with cloud platforms such as GCP or AWS and large-scale experimentation infrastructure.

Yahoo raises $1.6B with 11% bond yield as Apollo-backed firm refinances debt

Yahoo has raised $1.6 billion in high-yield financing to refinance debt from Apollo Global Management's acquisition of the company. The deal comprises a $700 million term loan B priced at 6.5 percentage points over the US benchmark and $900 million in junk bonds due in 2031 at an 11% yield. The 11% yield represents one of the highest-yielding corporate debt offerings this year, significantly above the 7.2% average for existing B-rated bonds. The refinancing replaces loans from Apollo's 2021 $5 billion buyout of Yahoo from Verizon Communications, which were priced more favourably at 5.5 percentage points over benchmark. Moody's Ratings noted concerns about Yahoo's reliance on desktop traffic and competition from larger players in search advertising, though the deal attracted strong investor interest amid broader high-yield issuance.

Alibaba vs. The World

Back in 2010 and 2011, Alibaba Group founder and executive chairman and then–chief executive Jack Ma and executive vice chairman Joseph Tsai were under pressure. Executives at Yahoo!, which owned a 40 percent stake in the Chinese e-commerce giant, were under the gun from their own investors to cut corporate debt and extract value from their prized asset, and they wanted to sell down their stake. The problem: The Alibaba executives were struggling to find buyers.
