Requirements
  • A current Alabama or multistate Registered Nurse license is required.
  • Current American Heart Association or American Red Cross Basic Life Support Provider training is required.
  • At least 2 years of experience as a registered nurse is required.
  • Applicable certifications must be obtained within 6 months, including Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support, Pediatric Advanced Life Support, Trauma Nursing Core Course, Neonatal Resuscitation, or Intermediate Fetal Monitoring, depending on the assigned clinical area.
  • International registered nurses must have an approved Alabama Board of Nursing registered nurse license or multistate license, or be able to obtain one before starting.
  • International registered nurses must have current American Heart Association or American Red Cross Basic Life Support Provider training, or obtain it within 30 days of starting.
  • International registered nurses must have a minimum associate degree.
  • International registered nurses must be able to read, write legibly, speak, and comprehend English.
  • Trauma Nursing Core Course must be completed within 12 months of the hire date.
  • Candidates must be able to use computers, electronic mail, telephone, and texting.
  • Candidates must be able to tolerate prolonged periods of standing and walking and perform standing, walking, kneeling, bending, sitting, and stooping.
  • Candidates must be able to lift, push, pull, and carry objects and exert up to 50 pounds occasionally, 30 pounds frequently, and 10 pounds constantly.
  • Candidates must be able to perform the duties with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Candidates must possess stamina to provide 24-hour management for assigned areas of responsibility.
  • Hearing and vision must be normal or corrected to within normal range.
Responsibilities
  • Coordinate unit activities and provide leadership for unit staffing, patient assignments, and crisis and emergency situations.
  • Supervise and evaluate nursing care furnished to patients in the assigned clinical department.
  • Evaluate the care for each LPN-assigned patient upon admission and, when appropriate, on an ongoing basis according to accepted nursing standards and hospital policy.
  • Promote efficient patient flow, including timely discharges and admissions.
  • Promote adherence to established safety protocols, policies, and procedures.
  • Serve as a clinical resource and subject matter expert for staff.
  • Provide timely feedback and appropriate accountability as needed.
  • Implement evidence-based practices.
  • Round on patients, physicians, and employees.
  • Lead the unit-based daily huddle and represent the unit at the hospital-wide daily huddle.
  • Maintain orientation, in-service, and unit competency assessment records.
  • Adhere to productivity, revenue, and expense goals.
  • Use sound judgment and critical-thinking skills for decision-making and problem-solving.
  • Maintain effective interdepartmental relationships with other unit leaders and departments to pursue common goals.
  • Ensure compliance with quality standards and regulatory agency requirements.
  • Take management call as directed.
  • Facilitate two-way communication and timely information exchange among stakeholders.
  • Create an environment that supports employee recruitment and retention.
  • Maintain performance, patient and employee satisfaction, and financial standards outlined in the performance evaluation.
  • Perform compliance requirements outlined in the Employee Handbook.
  • Adhere to DCH Health System policies, procedures, and behavioral standards.
  • Perform essential job functions in a manner that ensures patient, visitor, and employee safety.
  • Identify and reduce unsafe practices and take action to reduce risks and hazards.
  • Use electronic mail, time and attendance software, learning management software, and the intranet.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Desired Qualifications
  • A bachelor's degree is preferred.
  • Specialty nursing experience in the applied area is preferred.
