Requirements
  • A portfolio of independent projects demonstrating applied mechanical design and prototyping skills is required.
  • Prior shop experience with CNC machining, including milling and lathe work, additive manufacturing, vacuum forming, laser cutting, and general fabrication tools is required.
  • Proficiency with SolidWorks, including the ability to produce parts, assemblies, drawings, and manufacturable designs, is required.
  • Strong understanding of diverse materials and physics to facilitate rapid prototyping is required.
Responsibilities
  • Design and develop compact, ruggedized subsystems, housings, fixtures, test rigs, and mechanical assemblies in computer-aided design, considering shock, vibration, environmental exposure, serviceability, and manufacturability.
  • Prototype components using CNC machining, 3D printing, laser cutting, vacuum or pressure forming, and general shop tools.
  • Develop and integrate fluidic subsystems, including manifolds, channels, valves, pumps, fittings, and sealing solutions such as O-rings, gaskets, and compression fittings.
  • Apply design for manufacturability and design for assembly principles, perform tolerance analysis and fit checks, and plan and run mechanical, pressure, flow, thermal, and environmental tests to evaluate performance, identify failure modes, and advance designs toward reliable production.
  • Work with vendors and manufacturers to source parts, review fabrication options, resolve design issues, and improve cost, lead time, and quality.
  • Run live demonstrations, field testing, and operator feedback sessions, then use the findings to improve designs through rapid iteration.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience with peristaltic and syringe pumps and with solenoid and shape-memory alloy valves.
  • Experience with ruggedization standards and military-standard or military-specification design.
  • Experience with MATLAB or other tools for thermal management and computational fluid dynamics analysis.
  • Experience applying design for manufacturability and design for assembly principles in regulated industries such as defense, aerospace, or medical.
  • Knowledge of high-performance materials, including PEEK, PTFE, composites, aluminum alloys, and stainless steels.

Pilgrim Labs builds an AI-powered platform for product teams to turn customer feedback into strategic product decisions. It connects with data sources like Slack, Zendesk, and Gong to collect customer input and research in one place, then uses artificial intelligence to identify customer needs, pain points, and opportunities. This helps teams prioritize features and shape their roadmaps based on actual user sentiment rather than just anecdotes. Compared with others, Pilgrim combines multiple data streams into a single, data-driven view and targets product managers, designers, researchers, and executives to align everyone around customer insights. The company aims to help teams create customer-centric products more efficiently by guiding development with structured, evidence-based analysis.

What believers are saying

  • Pilgrim raised $4.3 million in 2025 from Cantos, Thiel Capital, and Refactor.
  • 2026 hiring for government ops signals push toward contracts and procurement pipelines.
  • Redwood City recruiting across biology, hardware, and engineering supports faster product execution.

What critics are saying

  • Pilgrim lacks active Defense Department contracts as of 2025-09-10, blocking revenue.
  • Kingsfoil still lacks shelf availability and FDA approval timelines remain unproven.
  • A 1-10 person team cannot fundraise indefinitely without contracts or regulatory wins.

What makes Pilgrim Labs unique

  • Jake Adler launched Pilgrim in 2023, targeting battlefield-ready biotech, not software.
  • Kingsfoil, Voyager, and ARGUS span wound care, chemical defense, and CBRN surveillance.
  • Pilgrim sells mission-driven biotech with in-house prototyping and operational validation.

Pilgrim raises $4.3M for biotech innovation

Jake Adler, the 21-year-old founder of Pilgrim, demonstrated his biotech startup's wound dressing, Kingsfoil, by cutting open his leg on camera. This bold move helped Pilgrim raise $4.3 million from investors, including Peter Thiel. Pilgrim aims to develop battlefield-ready biotech for military and civilian use. Kingsfoil, a clay-based hemostatic dressing, is undergoing further testing and aims for expedited FDA approval. The company is also developing other biotech products.
