ASCE Sacramento honors BWC Stockton Marine Oil Terminal with Outstanding Project Award.

ASCE Sacramento honors BWC Stockton Marine Oil Terminal with Outstanding Project Award. September 22, 2026 The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Sacramento Section recognized the new BWC Stockton Marine Oil Terminal in Stockton, CA, with a 2025 Outstanding Project Award in the Airports and Ports category. The award was presented on 17 September 2026 during the ASCE Sacramento Section Awards Banquet at Cafeteria 15L in Sacramento, where SGH team members Rose McClure and Luis Palacios accepted the award on behalf of the project team. This project shows what is possible when owners, regulators, and engineers work together toward a common goal. SGH served as the prime design consultant and led the structural design for the terminal, working closely with general contractor CS Marine Constructors, environmental permitting consultant AnchorQEA, geotechnical subconsultant GFT, and electrical engineer YEI. The project marks California's first marine oil terminal in more than thirty years built on a completely undeveloped site. "This project shows what is possible when owners, regulators, and engineers work together toward a common goal," said SGH Executive Principal William Bruin. "The team developed a resilient, efficient design that supports California's renewable energy transition while meeting some of the nation's highest standards for environmental protection and seismic performance." Located at Berth 8 in the Port of Stockton, the terminal serves as an important addition to the port's multimodal transportation network. The design allows the terminal to accommodate vessels with a deadweight of up to 50,000 MT and provides BWC with a dedicated marine berth to support cargo transfer operations serving its tank farm facilities. Designed to meet California's Marine Oil Terminal Engineering and Maintenance Standards (MOTEMS), the terminal reflects today's heightened expectations for seismic performance, safety, environmental protection, and operations. To support the design, GFT completed a site-specific soils study to define seismic hazard and soil conditions, and SGH performed nonlinear pushover analyses to confirm that the overwater structures met MOTEMS performance objectives. The design also incorporates oil spill containment and environmental protection measures, including fail-safe emergency shutdown and shore isolation valves, secondary containment at the loading platform, and an oil-water separator to treat collected rainwater before discharge. Close coordination among the technical teams and regulatory and local agencies helped align engineering, permitting, and construction efforts, allowing the team to complete the overwater terminal structures within the San Joaquin River's limited in-water work season. Rose McClure and Luis Palacios (SGH), David Papst (BWC), Katie Chamberlin (AnchorQEA), and Eric Ables and Brian Gaffigan (BWC). David Papst, Eric Ables, and Brian Gaffigan from BWC, and Katie Chamberlin from AnchorQEA attended the awards banquet with the SGH team. Vitro glazing solutions transform Harvard's Gund Hall with major energy and comfort improvements.

Vitro glazing solutions transform Harvard's Gund Hall with major energy and comfort improvements. June 3, 2026 Harvard University's Graduate School of Design has completed a significant façade modernization of Gund Hall, leveraging advanced glazing technologies from Vitro Architectural Glass to dramatically improve thermal performance, occupant comfort, and daylight quality while preserving the building's iconic architectural identity. Originally designed in 1972, the concrete modernist landmark is known for its stepped studio terraces, expansive curtain walls, and clerestory glazing, but decades of operation exposed challenges related to air infiltration, water penetration, glare, and energy efficiency. The renovation team, led by Bruner / Cott Architects in collaboration with Lam Partners, Simpson Gumpertz & Heger, Oldcastle BuildingEnvelope, A&A Window Products, and Shawmut Design & Construction, developed façade-specific glazing strategies tailored to the building's varying solar exposures. Rather than applying a uniform solution, performance targets were established for each elevation, balancing visible light transmittance, solar heat gain control, and visual clarity. A cornerstone of the project was the implementation of Vitro's VacuMax(TM) Vacuum Insulating Glass (VIG) on the north and south elevations. To meet Massachusetts stretch energy code requirements demanding a façade U-value of 0.25, the design team sought an alternative to bulky triple glazing that would have altered the building's original appearance. The resulting hybrid VIG assembly delivered an overall system U-value of 0.19, while achieving an exceptional center-of-glass U-value of 0.06, approximately four times the thermal performance of conventional double glazing. The south elevation incorporates Solarban(R) R100 glass, Solargray(R) glass, Acuity(R) low-iron glass, warm-edge spacers, and argon-filled insulating units to reduce glare while maintaining accurate color rendering and achieving an interior solar heat gain coefficient of 0.21. On the north and east façades, Solarban(R) 90 Acuity(R) glass was selected to replicate the clarity of the original plate glass while minimizing unwanted color shifts and reducing solar heat gain. Across 15,475 square feet of newly glazed area replacing 1,617 original units, the upgraded enclosure is projected to reduce building energy use intensity by 22.2% and utility costs by 19.1%, while significantly enhancing daylight autonomy and studio comfort throughout Gund Hall.
