Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.

Responsibilities
  • Perform clerical and receptionist duties related to the day-to-day operations of nursing units.
  • Coordinate unit activities including admissions, discharges, patient transfers, and unit and patient supplies and equipment.
  • Assist with patient flow and Patient Care Services coordination under the Patient Care Manager of the designated unit.
  • Maintain positive and professional relationships with patients, visitors, and employees.
  • Participate in Performance and Quality Improvement activities, including data collection, analysis, risk management, claims activities, and Continuous Quality Improvement teams.
  • Follow safety and security, risk management, infection control, patient service, and organizational policies and procedures.
  • Protect patient privacy and maintain computer-access security in accordance with HIPAA regulations and patient confidentiality requirements.
  • Identify patients using two identifiers and ensure that patients have appropriate identification bands.
  • Document and read back verbal or telephone orders.
  • Order supplies using the Keane system as directed.
  • Maintain admission and discharge log books on the unit.
  • Direct phone calls and requests appropriately to meet patient needs.
  • Provide patients and families with information, comfort, orientation, and service according to hospital standards.
  • Respond to call lights and notify healthcare providers of patient needs.
  • Maintain the unit environment in a clean, safe, and orderly manner.
  • Participate in unit meetings, in-service education, mandatory hospital programs, fire drills, and emergency drills.
  • Address issues and concerns with peers, subordinates, and supervisors using a positive problem-solving approach.
  • Manage time effectively and comply with attendance, lateness, meal-break, uniform, grooming, and employee-identification policies.
  • Contribute to unit-based programs and research strategies that monitor and improve patient-care quality.
  • Remove or report broken or damaged equipment and check that call-bell alarm settings are audible.
  • Monitor unit census and activity.
  • Maintain inventory of stationery supplies, remove outdated forms, and replace them with current forms.
  • Use the Allscripts system to discharge and transfer patients accurately and promptly.
  • Schedule patient appointments in Allscripts for designated areas when applicable.
  • Generate reports in the Allscripts system.
  • Replace laser-printer cartridges.
  • Give the oncoming Unit Associate a report covering daily activities, anticipated admissions, discharges and transfers, unit census, scheduled tests, and off-unit patient locations.
  • Track the location of medical records.
  • Expedite patient flow by arranging prompt cleaning of patient beds.
  • Communicate with Admitting/Bed Board and Housekeeping to expedite patient movement.
  • Obtain and interpret information about the age-specific patient population served.
  • Recognize growth and development issues for the age-specific patient population served.
