Responsibilities
- Deliver medical care to a wide variety of patients and examine and treat patients independently and in autonomous collaboration with other health care professionals.
- Ensure appropriate illness and injury care and disease prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and recovery.
- Prescribe medications and order diagnostic tests as appropriate.
- Advise patients about continuing care.
- Perform and document complete physical examinations and comprehensive health histories.
- Perform age-appropriate histories and physical examinations independently.
- Order and interpret diagnostic and therapeutic tests relative to patients’ age-specific needs.
- Prescribe appropriate pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatment modalities.
- Implement interventions to help patients regain or maintain physiologic stability.
- Provide care in accordance with facility, state, and federal regulations.
- Monitor the effectiveness of interventions.
- Facilitate patient transitions within and between health care settings, including admitting, transferring, and discharging patients.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary team members by making appropriate referrals.
- Facilitate staff, patient, and family decision-making by providing educational tools.
- Adhere to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguard University assets.
- For day-shift assignments, work the Monday-through-Friday core schedule, with shifts ranging from 8 to 12 hours depending on the assignment.
- Work collaboratively with the attending on the medical team or with the Emergency Department as necessary.
- Round with the physician or individually as assigned.
- Bill for visits if assigned.
- Admit patients as necessary during the shift.
- Receive intensive care unit and procedure transfers and coordinate floor assignments.
- Act as a liaison with floor nursing staff and promote nursing critical thinking and scope of practice.
- Collaborate with Care Coordination, including Social Work, Case Management, and Discharge Planning.
- Coordinate discharge efforts for the medical team and ensure that all discharge needs are met.
- Respond to Rapid Responses (Code Rescue) and Code Blues for assigned patients.
- Collaborate with administration on process improvement activities.
- Participate in departmental initiatives that leverage hiring practices to promote equity, including potentially joining the Nurse Practitioner Hiring Committee.
- Remove central venous catheters, peripherally inserted central catheters, and midlines if trained to do so.
- Remove temporary dialysis catheters if trained to do so.
- Remove stitches from tracheostomies and percutaneous gastrostomy feeding tubes.
- Remove chest tubes if trained to do so.
- Provide cross-coverage for the night shift if necessary.
- Work during inclement weather and respond to catastrophic events as necessary when required.
- For night-shift assignments, work a core schedule of 14 shifts per month consisting of 12-hour shifts, Monday through Sunday, on a 7-days-on/7-days-off rotation.
- Maintain schedule flexibility to ensure all night shifts are staffed.
- Perform floor night coverage for assigned medical teams.
- Answer the assigned team phone for the entirety of the shift.
- Maintain records of floor calls and deliver morning sign-out to teams daily.
- Admit patients overnight to appropriate medical teams in collaboration with the night attending.
- Provide cross-coverage for the day shift if necessary.
