Requirements
  • A college background is required.
  • A minimum of one year of laboratory experience is required; relevant coursework may count toward this experience.
  • Knowledge of laboratory techniques is required.
  • General laboratory safety, hazardous waste, biohazard, and blood-borne pathogen experience is required.
  • Ability to accurately perform calculations is required.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and exercise independent judgment is required.
  • Ability to learn new laboratory skills and act autonomously is required.
Responsibilities
  • Prepare the laboratory portion of undergraduate Biology courses and support multiple courses simultaneously.
  • Collaborate with course instructors and the manager to determine the components needed for safe and effective laboratory instruction.
  • Prepare chemical reagents, media, cultures, and consumables for undergraduate experiments.
  • Calculate molarity, percent solutions, and other formulas required for laboratory work.
  • Pre-run laboratory procedures and troubleshoot protocols under the supervision of course instructors or the manager.
  • Attend laboratory meetings and act as a guide for Teaching Assistants.
  • Set up and maintain microscopes, computers, audiovisual tools, and other scientific equipment.
  • Provide technical assistance and instruction in the proper use of laboratory equipment.
  • Perform routine maintenance and arrange for equipment repairs when necessary.
  • Maintain clean laboratory classrooms and properly store laboratory components and equipment.
  • Purchase chemicals, specimens, and consumable supplies.
  • Evaluate new equipment for student and teaching staff use and propose recommendations to the manager.
  • Monitor chemical and biological waste and arrange for disposal or decontamination.
  • Act as the laboratory safety officer for laboratory classrooms and attend required safety meetings and training.
  • Prepare reagents, media, and cultures according to approved protocols.
  • Operate the glassware washer, autoclave, and other laboratory equipment as needed.
  • Transport laboratory equipment and materials between laboratory classrooms and buildings.
  • Order course supplies and general laboratory and office supplies for Teaching Labs staff.
  • Perform regular laboratory maintenance and cleaning.
  • Maintain documentation of laboratory protocols and equipment history.
  • Anticipate instructors' needs and proactively prepare laboratory classrooms using student protocols.
  • Serve as the first point of contact for laboratory users regarding safety.
  • Prepare periodic reports on duties and status for the supervisor.
  • Lift and transport equipment between locations when required.
Desired Qualifications
  • A bachelor's degree in Biology or a related field is strongly preferred.
