Requirements
  • Working knowledge of procedures and techniques involved in administering routine and special treatments to patients.

  • Ability to frequently lift or move objects and patients weighing over 35 pounds with assistance or appropriate lift equipment.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to document and communicate pertinent information using computer and/or paper documentation tools.
  • Working knowledge of principles and practices of providing nonprofessional bedside patient care.
  • Currently listed as a Nursing Assistant I with the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, Division of Health Service Regulation, with no substantiated findings of abuse, fraud, neglect, or misappropriation of property.
  • Maintain or complete BCLS certification by the end of new-hire orientation, typically during the first week of employment.
  • Pre-employment Physical Capacity Testing may be required.
Responsibilities
  • Provide direct patient care and non-direct patient care unit coordination as delegated by the Registered Nurse or Licensed Practical Nurse.
  • Provide basic care and comfort, assist with care of acutely ill patients, practice medical asepsis, respect patient and family dignity and privacy, and respect cultural differences during patient care.
  • Follow basic policies and procedures and respond appropriately during emergency situations.
  • Maintain the patient and family environment; perform general unit upkeep; and order and maintain unit equipment and supplies, with or without direct supervision.
  • Use accurate verbal and written communication and document patient care appropriately in the electronic health record.
  • Prepare patients, equipment, and supplies for procedures and provide manual assistance as required.
  • Obtain and record patient data for medical records and inform the Registered Nurse or Licensed Practical Nurse of collected information.
  • Administer treatment and personal care, including feeding, bathing, hair care, changing clothing, nail care, bed-making, ambulation assistance, enemas, skin care, and bowel and bladder elimination, and provide additional care to meet patients' personal needs and comfort.
  • Reinforce teaching provided by the Registered Nurse or providers as needed.
  • Assist providers and nurses with physical examinations by positioning patients, changing non-sterile dressings, and weighing patients.
  • Take and record vital signs, record intake and output, and apply ice bags.
  • Note and report changes in patients' conditions.
  • Turn and position patients; set up and feed patients as necessary; and provide fresh drinking water.
  • Perform fingerstick blood glucose testing after appropriate training, document results, and notify the Registered Nurse or Licensed Practical Nurse.
  • Assist with patient admission, discharge, and transportation.
  • Follow standard precautions and use personal protective equipment as required.
  • Collect and deliver patient specimens and conduct routine tests on them.
  • Clean assigned areas and stock and replenish supplies and equipment as required.
  • Maintain required skills validation and attend educational offerings as part of professional development.
  • Support the development of other staff and formal learners.
  • Perform clean dressing changes for wounds over 48 hours old, as applicable.
  • Perform other duties related to the work described.
