Simplify's Take

What believers are saying

  • Alphabet's $4.75B acquisition secures 100% ownership of Intersect's data center energy pipeline[1][2].
  • Collaboration with Google and TPG targets $20B renewable power investments by 2030[1][6].
  • 2.2 GW operating solar and 4 GW planned solar break ground in 2025[1][8].

What critics are saying

  • Alphabet dictates project scope solely for AI data centers, eliminating strategic autonomy within 6 months[2].
  • Excluded Texas and California operating assets strip ~$2.6B in prior revenue from Intersect[3][5].
  • Dependency on Google's AI capex creates demand risk if AI spending slows or suppliers shift[4].

What makes Intersect unique

  • Intersect co-locates data centers with dedicated renewable power, bypassing U.S. grid bottlenecks[3][5].
  • It operates as an independent subsidiary under CEO Sheldon Kimber post-Alphabet acquisition[2][4].
  • The firm develops gigawatt-scale 'energy parks' integrating solar, storage, and IT infrastructure[5][8].

Google and Intersect have started construction of the Meitner Energy Center, a data center and power complex in Gray and Roberts Counties, Texas, built alongside dedicated on-site energy generation, according to a press release. The project co-locates the data center with more than 1 GW of wind, solar and battery storage, with additional on-site gas used for reliability. The co-location model is designed to meet the facility's power demand with dedicated generation and reduce reliance on the regional grid. The facility will use air cooling to limit water consumption. The project follows an earlier Google-Intersect development in Haskell County that pairs a data center with 640 MW of solar and 1.3 GWh of storage.Google acquired Intersect last year in a transaction valued at USD 4.75bn. Press release: information on upcoming Roman Project meetings. July 10, 2026 (Hereford) - The Deaf Smith County Hospital District Board of Directors and leadership encourages the community to attend an upcoming public meeting on the proposed Roman Project, a collaboration of Google, Intersect, and Blattner to construct data centers in Deaf Smith County. The community-wide meeting is scheduled for July 14, 2026, at 5:00 p.m. at the Hereford Civic Center with representatives from Google, Intersect, and Blattner providing information on the proposed data center project. This meeting is the best opportunity for community members to learn more about the project, express their opinions and perspectives, and ask questions about timeline and impact. "The proposed data center project is generating a great deal of community interest and attention, and we want to make sure everyone has the opportunity to have their voice heard in the most appropriate forum," said Candice Smith, RN, MSN, CEO, Deaf Smith County Hospital District. The next meeting of the Deaf Smith County Hospital District Board of Directors will be held Thursday, July 23, 2026, at 5:30 p.m. at the hospital. The board will consider Google's tax abatement proposal as part of the Roman Project. It will not consider other aspects of the data center project, such as water use or environmental impact. As with all meetings of the Deaf Smith County Hospital District Board of Directors, this meeting is open to the public, and the agenda will be made public on the hospital website in advance. Each meeting of the board provides an opportunity for public comment, and any member of the public may attend. The hospital district adheres to all requirements of the Texas Open Meetings Act and the Texas Public Information Act. "As the region's healthcare provider and a major employer, we are engaged in learning about the data center project and exploring its potential economic impact along with everyone in our community," added Smith. "We always welcome respectful public discussion and civic engagement at all our hospital district board meetings and hope to see many of our neighbors at the community-wide open house July 14."
