Prediction markets are moving into sports infrastructure. Norway is discussing regulation without talking about sport. Aug 31, 2026 8 min Published: 31 August 2026. Sportradar and Polymarket expanded their partnership on 27 August to cover more than 20 global leagues and competitions representing approximately 300,000 matches a year. The agreement shows that prediction markets are no longer merely digital venues where users trade on match outcomes. They are becoming a new commercial participant in the infrastructure around sport. Sportradar will provide premium sports data, live odds, audiovisual rights and streaming, marketing services and integrity solutions. The portfolio includes the Bundesliga, EuroLeague Basketball, the Chinese Basketball Association, the National Basketball League, tennis Grand Slams and UTR Pro. These are added to rights and data already connected to competitions including the ATP Tour, MLB, NHL, MLS and UFC. Sportradar describes itself as foundational technology for the category. The phrase is commercial, but the development it describes is real: prediction markets are connecting directly to data feeds, media content and control systems that are already central to the global sports industry. Sport is the largest market. The Norwegian discussion about prediction markets has focused largely on elections, politics, war, conflict and their relationship with gambling regulation. Figures from Pew Research Center show that the commercial centre of gravity lies elsewhere. Pew analysed global trading volume on Kalshi and Polymarket since July 2024. Sport accounts for 80% of volume on Kalshi and 39% on Polymarket. Politics, by comparison, represents 4% on Kalshi and 32% on Polymarket. The analysis is based on data from The Block and covers developments through April 2026. Polymarket US is not included. The figures are therefore not a complete measurement of the entire market, but they document a clear relationship: sport is not a peripheral category for prediction platforms. For Kalshi, it is by far the largest. This also changes how the sports industry should understand these companies. When sport generates such a large share of activity, access to fast and reliable match data, live pictures and official results becomes business-critical. The platforms need the same type of infrastructure that betting operators, media companies and analytics providers already pay for. From trading platform to stadium presence. Two days before the Sportradar announcement, Kalshi announced partnerships with five MLB clubs: the Atlanta Braves, Boston Red Sox, Los Angeles Dodgers, San Diego Padres and San Francisco Giants. The agreements include stadium advertising, digital and social channels, radio and fan activation. With the Dodgers, Kalshi will appear on LED displays at Dodger Stadium and receive naming rights to the stadium's Gold Glove Bar. Kalshi also states that trading volume in baseball markets has grown 36-fold in one year. This is a significant shift. Prediction markets are not merely external services using sport as an underlying event. They are becoming sponsors, media partners, data customers and visible participants at the point where clubs meet their supporters. This does not mean prediction markets and traditional sports betting are legally or commercially identical. Classification varies by country, product and regulatory regime. What matters to the sports industry is that both categories demand many of the same rights: real-time data, odds data, audiovisual products, marketing access and integrity services. Norway discusses regulation, but not sport. SV representatives Mirell Høyer-Berntsen, Sunniva Holmås Eidsvoll, Ingrid Fiskaa and Kathy Lie submitted a parliamentary proposal on 1 June calling for regulation of prediction markets and stronger oversight. Document 8:297 S discusses elections, political processes, war and conflict, military operations and economic developments. It also addresses minors, marketing, supervision and Norwegian gambling law. Sport is not mentioned. This is a representative proposal, not a parliamentary decision or an expression of an established majority position. The legal relationship between platforms such as Kalshi and Polymarket and Norwegian law is among the questions the proposers want assessed. It is therefore too early to draw firm conclusions about how specific services or contracts should be classified in Norway. The absence of sport is nevertheless notable. Political debate starts with the most controversial societal markets, while commercial development is driven largely by sport. Regulation and the sports industry's rights discussion therefore risk developing on separate tracks. A new buyer for sports data. The key question for Norwegian sport is not whether it should welcome prediction markets or keep them out. Rights holders must first understand what is acquiring new market value. When new companies pay for official results, real-time feeds, live odds, streaming, integrity controls and access to fans, a new buyer group emerges for sport's digital rights. That can affect pricing, packaging and negotiating power. Sports data is not a single product. A rights package may distinguish between historical data, real-time data, editorial statistics, performance-analysis data, odds-related data, video streams and rights to use data in models or new commercial services. The same data points can have very different value depending on speed, quality, exclusivity and permitted use. AI makes these distinctions more important. Data initially sold for display or analysis may later be used to train models, automate content or build new products. That does not mean all secondary use should be prohibited. It means usage rights should be explicit. Norwegian football is building its 2029 rights package. In February, the Norwegian Football Federation decided to begin the sales process for Norwegian football media rights from 2029. The work is being conducted with Norsk Toppfotball, Toppfotball Kvinner and Norsk Ligafotball. The process gives Norwegian football a concrete opportunity to assess the distinction between media rights, sports data, real-time data, betting and prediction data, and other digital usage rights. The point is not that Norwegian football should sell data to prediction markets. The point is that the organisations should know what their data is worth, which uses may emerge and which rights they want to retain. This assessment becomes more important when buyers no longer fit a single category. Sportradar's Polymarket agreement combines data, live odds, streaming, marketing and integrity. Kalshi's MLB deals combine partnerships, stadium visibility and fan activation. The boundaries between media partner, technology supplier, sponsor and marketplace are becoming less distinct. Three questions Norwegian sport should ask. The development raises at least three strategic questions: 1. Which sports data do Norwegian Sport Tech actually own and control? 2. Which usage rights do Norwegian Sport Tech want to sell, and which do Norwegian Sport Tech want to retain? 3. How do Norwegian Sport Tech ensure that value created by new markets also benefits the sport that produces the data? These questions are not limited to football. Federations, leagues and event organisers in smaller sports may also control datasets, live streams and competition information that acquire new uses. They often have less negotiating capacity and a greater need to define their rights before the market reaches them. A topic for Norway's new sports white paper. The Norwegian government is preparing a new white paper on sport and has invited input on developments affecting sport's opportunities, challenges and operating conditions. The deadline is 30 October 2026. Sports data, new digital markets and control over sport's digital value chain should be part of that discussion. Prediction markets show why. Within months, they have moved from being discussed as a financial and regulatory phenomenon to becoming integrated into the data, media and sponsorship structures surrounding global sport. For Norwegian sport, this is not about taking a position for or against one particular platform. It is about understanding that data generated on the field has already become a strategic asset, and that a new group of buyers is now prepared to pay for access. Altenar moves to deny Zurich advantage to Sportradar in US data conflict. Published on: August 26, 2026 | Last updated: August 26, 2026, 10:32 AM Altenar has stated that it will oppose all attempts by Sportradar to relocate an ongoing lawsuit concerning the data rights and controls of US professional sports leagues outside the US District Court for the District of New Jersey. This morning, Altenar notified SBC that the Nasdaq-listed sports technology group is "attempting to force private arbitration in Zurich" to settle the multimillion-dollar dispute outside the US courts. In April, Altenar began legal proceedings against Sportradar in the New Jersey District Court, accusing the technology giant of abusing its position as a principal betting data supplier for the National Hockey League (NHL), National Basketball Association (NBA), Major League Baseball (MLB) and Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP). Sportradar is accused of manipulating the price and availability of US sports data that Altenar regards as essential to operating its sportsbook services. The lawsuit alleges that this conduct restricts competition and breaches Section 2 of the US Sherman Act. New Jersey court filings state: "Sportradar is trying to maintain its market dominance by unfairly eliminating its competitors. It is relying on its monopoly on sports data to squash businesses with a competing offer, despite previously decrying other companies for doing exactly the same." Sportradar has asked the court to refer the dispute to arbitration in Switzerland, citing a binding clause contained in a master partnership agreement signed with Altenar in 2021. Altenar maintains there is no grounds to relocate an antitrust dispute that belongs in the US "in federal court, not private arbitration in Zurich". Standing by its claims of no-relocation, Altenar denies the contract clause of Sportradar citing that it has been used to illegal bypass terms of the Sherman Act -"Sportradar is entitled to arbitrate the disputes it actually agreed to arbitrate," / "It is not entitled to use the MPA as a shield against the Sherman Act in the very market the agreement carved out." Altenar stands by the original claim submitted to NJ courts. The claim challenges Sportradar's refusal to supply live pro-league data needed by Altenar to price and operate in North America and wider markets, rather than challenging the terms of its agreed partnership. Sportradar must explain exclusivity of partnerships. Altenar's legal entanglement with Sportradar is the second such case against the Swiss sportstech over the last two years. Back in March 2025, real-time sports data and tech firm Sportscastr (PANDA Interactive) expanded a previous patent infringement lawsuit against Sportradar and fellow sportstech and data giant Genius Sports to also include anti-competitive complaints, accusing both defendants of locking access to their data behind the purchase of their products. The antitrust claims against Sportradar were subsequently dismissed with prejudice by Judge Rodney Gilstrap at the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas on 9 April 2026. Altenar is now raising similar concerns, with the added context that Sportradar is breaching competition rules by ringfencing its pro-league data and simultaneously launching its own sportsbook platform, ORAKO, while also owning betting tech supplier NSoft. Both platforms are in direct competition with Altenar for operator contracts. As noted: "This has played out alongside Sportradar's launch of its own turnkey platform, ORAKO, as well as its NSoft product, which competes with Altenar's offer to the market." As such, Altenar stands by its injunction to end Sportradar's alleged refusal to supply the disputed data, as well as damages worth several million dollars (a figure yet to be disclosed). The claimant is represented by the law firm Cahill Gordon & Reindel LLP. An Altenar spokesperson said: "Sportradar's global headquarters are in Switzerland; it feels safe there. Its motion to send this case to confidential Swiss arbitration is a transparent attempt to shield itself from US justice and public scrutiny. Altenar looks forward to its day in court." The New Jersey court must now determine whether Altenar's antitrust claims can proceed publicly in the US or should be referred to arbitration under the companies' 2021 agreement. Altenar seeks an NJ arbitration to determine the remit and boundaries of how Sportradar manages the collection and distribution of data for the NBA, NHL and MLB as a technology partner of the leagues handling key commercial data and IP. Competition must be upheld "to stop Sportradar from abusing its exclusive control over live official league data for the NBA, NHL, and MLB". Sportraar informed SBC News that it "does not comment on pending litigation". Article contributions from Viktor Kayed
Altenar challenges Zurich move request in Sportradar lawsuit. The US lawsuit was originally filed in New Jersey. August 26, 2026 Regulatory Sportsbook software company Altenar has filed an opposition to Sportradar's request to move a US lawsuit into confidential arbitration in Zurich. In April, news broke that Altenar had filed lawsuits in the District Court of New Jersey, US, and in the UK, which accuse Switzerland-based Sportradar of allegedly "abusing its data dominance." In addition, Altenar accuses Sportradar of breaching Section 2 of the Sherman Act by allegedly preventing competition in the US market for sports betting platforms. Litigation on the US sports betting market Sportradar has its own turnkey platform, Orako, which, along with its NSoft product, Altenar says competes with its own offer to the market. "Live scouting data is essential for generating live betting odds, both of which are crucial to Altenar running a successful sportsbook," read a statement put out by the company. Altenar has instructed litigation law firm Cahill Gordon & Reindel LLP to represent it in the US proceedings. Sportradar declined to comment saying it "does not comment on pending litigation."
