About the Job

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree with at least 8 years of relevant experience, a master's degree with at least 6 years, or a PhD with at least 4 years; an additional 4 years of relevant experience may be substituted for a degree.
  • Possess TS/SCI clearance and be able to obtain a polygraph.
  • Have at least 3 years of relevant software reverse-engineering experience; experience in material exploitation, malware analysis, or vulnerability research is preferred.
  • Have experience with virtualization platforms such as VMware Workstation and KVM/QEMU for dynamic analysis, sandboxing, and system emulation.
  • Have experience with forensic disk-image analysis using tools such as Autopsy or guestfish to mount, modify, and extract artifacts from raw disk images.
  • Have experience with the software reverse-engineering toolchain, including Ghidra, GDB, Wireshark, MobaXterm, Nmap, or the Linux binutils suite, such as readelf, strace, ltrace, and ldd.
  • Have experience with network analysis using tools such as Wireshark and Nmap to baseline system behavior and identify communication protocols.
  • Have experience in Linux/Unix environments, including system administration, network configuration, SSH key management using ssh-keygen and virt-customize, or advanced command-line tools.
  • Demonstrate ability to perform live debugging of complex applications using GDB, including setting breakpoints, inspecting memory, and analyzing program state to support reverse-engineering efforts.
  • Have knowledge of low-level programming in C, C++, and Assembly, and experience with scripting languages such as Python.
  • Understand operating-system internals, x86/x64 assembly, and CPU architecture.
  • Have a solid understanding of common security practices and the ability to identify security flaws in software architecture.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze compiled software and binaries, using forensic techniques to extract critical artifacts, understand system architecture, and identify key software components.
  • Use virtualization and sandboxing environments, including VMware and KVM/QEMU, to run and observe software in its native operating environment; perform system-call tracing, network monitoring, and file-system analysis to reveal real-time behavior and interactions.
  • Perform live, on-system debugging with tools such as GDB to step through code execution; correlate dynamic findings with static analysis from Ghidra to validate assumptions, understand complex logic, and uncover obfuscated functionality.
  • Use reverse-engineering tools, with a focus on Ghidra, to decompile and disassemble software, analyze code paths, extract indicators, and uncover hidden or malicious logic not apparent through dynamic analysis alone.
  • Collaborate with analysts to integrate findings from system and operational documents; use this context to understand the system's Concept of Operations (CONOPS) and prioritize exploitation efforts.
  • Investigate vulnerabilities, undocumented features, and novel capabilities in target systems; develop proof-of-concept exploits, assess their potential impact on operational dependencies, and model and simulate features and functions to understand how software was developed, compiled, and deployed.
  • Use specialized analysis tools, including disk imagers, virtual-machine managers, network scanners, and debuggers, for end-to-end exploitation.
  • Mentor junior engineers in software reverse-engineering methodologies, tools, and techniques.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience in material exploitation, malware analysis, or vulnerability research.

About the Company

Peraton

Runs and secures technology for federal agencies

Peraton builds and runs secure technology for American defense, intelligence, space, and civilian agencies, from military networks to satellite ground stations. In 2025, the Federal Aviation Administration chose it to manage the overhaul of the nation's air traffic control system, replacing copper wiring with fiber and upgrading radar and radios. Its engineers, many holding security clearances, run and defend agency networks and data centers, write mission software, and operate space and communications systems, and agencies pay for this work through multiyear contracts. Peraton was formed in 2017, when private-equity firm Veritas Capital bought Harris Corporation's government IT business, and is based in Reston, Virginia.
