Job Description Summary

Dental assistants are responsible for providing the patient with high quality care by performing a variety of office, laboratory, and patient care duties. This usually entails helping the dentist handle patients, instruments, and supplies during the treatment of the teeth, mouth, and gums. Dental assistants also document patient care and take x-rays.

DA III Job Summary/Purpose: Under Direct supervision in a thorough and expedient manner, provide chair side dental assistance to the dentist, resident, or faculty. Provide clinical support in dental care operations; assist in the development of treatment plans for patients. Perform duties generally governed by broad instructions, objectives, policies that involve frequently changing conditions.

DA III Minimum Training and Education: A high school diploma, completion of an ADA accredited dental assisting course and 3 years of dental assisting experience OR a high school diploma and 5 years dental assisting experience.  Current American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or American Red Cross BLS for Healthcare Providers certification is required. Must have successfully completed the SC LLR and Board of Dentistry approved Radiation Safety certification structured course and exam.Completion of a South Carolina Radiation Safety course and exam Board approved radiation safely course also required.

For every 100 additional pounds, assistance will be required from another healthcare worker. 20 lbs. of force is needed to push a 400 lb. patient in a wheelchair on carpet. 25 lbs. of force is required to push a stretcher with a patient with one hand. Ability to maintain 20/40 vision, corrected, in one eye or with both eyes. (Continuous) Ability to see and recognize objects close at hand or at a distance. (Continuous) Ability to match or discriminate between colors. (Continuous) Ability to determine distance/relationship between objects; depth perception. (Continuous) Good peripheral vision capabilities. (Continuous) Ability to maintain hearing acuity, with correction.
