Requirements
  • Maintain an active AHIMA coding credential (RHIA, RHIT, CCS, or CCS-P) or AAPC coding credential (CPC or CPC-H) for the duration of the contract.
  • Demonstrate proficiency with ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, CPT/HCPCS, diagnosis-related group assignment, and evaluation and management guidelines.
  • Have experience working within VA systems such as VistA/CPRS and VIRR and complying with HIPAA and VA directives.
  • Have at least 3 years of Veterans Health Administration facility coding experience, including current or recent experience within the past 12 months in a lead, supervisory, or senior coding role.
  • Have experience conducting coding audits and delivering feedback.
  • Have experience mentoring or training other coders.
Responsibilities
  • Perform outpatient and/or inpatient facility coding for encounters assigned by the VA Portland Health Care System, including ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, CPT/HCPCS, diagnosis-related group, and evaluation and management coding.
  • Access and review health record documentation in the VA VistA/CPRS system and enter codes into the approved coding application.
  • Apply modifiers, Correct Coding Initiative bundling guidelines, and Reason Not Billable designations as appropriate.
  • Complete standard cases within 7 calendar days of receipt or discharge and priority cases within one business day.
  • Clarify conflicting, ambiguous, or nonspecific documentation and consult Veterans Health Administration coding guidance as appropriate.
  • Comply with HIPAA, VA/VHA privacy, security, and records management directives, including completing required VA training before system access and annually thereafter.
  • Comply with AHIMA Standards of Ethical Coding.
  • Conduct coding audits covering at least 5% of coded services, provide written feedback to team members, track quality trends, and report metrics weekly to the Arrow ARC project manager.
  • Ensure team coding production meets contract and program office standards, including at least 70 outpatient or 13 inpatient encounters per coder per 8-hour day and a 95% accuracy rate.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for contract team coding questions and VA coding-related inquiries involving documentation clarification, VHA policy, and contract compliance.
  • Mentor and support coders transitioning into VA/VHA coding environments and assist with onboarding and ongoing education as needed.
  • Participate in VA-directed coding reviews, pre-bill re-reviews, or RAC/MAC audits as applicable.
