Requirements
  • 15+ years of recruiting experience, focused on Director through C-suite searches, including 8+ years leading end-to-end retained searches at a dedicated executive search firm.
  • Deep experience placing executive leaders at growth-stage or pre-IPO companies, ideally during expansion into new business lines or verticals.
  • A proven track record conducting zero-to-one searches for first-of-their-kind roles, newly formed functions, or revenue-line leaders with initially undefined scope and leveling.
  • Experience running highly confidential searches, including sensitive replacement hires, with appropriate judgment and discretion.
  • Skill in shaping executive role narratives from scratch and partnering with executives to identify their actual hiring needs.
  • Ability to operate independently and build market maps, competitive landscapes, and candidate theses without a research team.
  • Proficiency with LinkedIn Recruiter for complex search strategy and sourcing, Greenhouse for applicant tracking system management and pipeline reporting, and Gem for outreach sequencing and campaign management.
  • Expertise in executive total rewards, including structuring, benchmarking, and negotiating base compensation, short- and long-term incentives, equity grants, and pre-IPO value models.
  • Ability to communicate total rewards value effectively to executive candidates.
  • Strong executive presence, including the ability to lead calibration sessions, respectfully challenge internal expectations using market data, and advise senior leaders while maintaining trust.
  • Experience managing external executive search-firm partnerships and holding firms accountable for delivery.
  • Ability to work effectively in growth-stage environments with fluid roles, limited compensation benchmarks, and significant ambiguity.
  • High editorial standards and fluency with artificial intelligence for market mapping, competitive intelligence, and work acceleration while producing polished candidate briefs, outreach, and executive-facing materials.
  • Enthusiasm for using artificial intelligence in daily work.
Responsibilities
  • Own and run Director through C-suite searches across critical and complex hiring needs, including confidential, first-of-their-kind, and new-vertical roles, from intake through close.
  • Lead intake sessions to establish role scope, leveling, scorecard criteria, and compensation parameters.
  • Serve as a thought partner to the executive team by challenging unsupported scope, advising on organizational design when relevant, and providing independent market expertise.
  • Lead executive compensation negotiations across the full total rewards package and structure offers aligned with market conditions, Babylist's compensation philosophy, and candidate requirements.
  • Deliver a strong candidate experience from initial outreach through offer close, regardless of the hiring outcome.
  • Manage external search-firm partnerships with accountability while building internal executive-search capabilities to reduce reliance on agencies.
Desired Qualifications
  • Prior training at True Search, Daversa Partners, Heidrick & Struggles, Spencer Stuart, or a comparable executive search firm.
  • Experience placing executive leaders during growth-stage or pre-IPO expansion into new business lines or verticals.

Babylist is a universal baby registry platform that lets expecting and new parents add baby products from multiple stores into one registry, rather than being tied to a single retailer. Parents create a registry, browse items from partner retailers like Amazon, Target, and Etsy, and add products from different stores in one place, aided by expert-vetted guides, an interactive checklist, and curated kits. It differentiates itself by enabling cross-store registries with practical planning tools and curated offerings, supported by affiliate commissions, exclusive kits, and advertising partnerships. The goal is to simplify shopping and planning for new parents, helping them feel confident about having everything they need while driving ongoing engagement for the business.

What believers are saying

  • Babylist reported $750 million 2025 revenue, 45% growth, and eight profitable years.
  • Babylist Health approaches $100 million revenue, diversifying beyond registries into higher-frequency services.
  • Early Investor and the SoHo showroom expand wallet share just as 40% of first-time parents already use Babylist.

What critics are saying

  • Amazon and Target keep stealing checkout with discounts, fast shipping, and captive ecosystems.
  • Babylist's universal registry moat erodes if MyRegistry, GiftX, or retailer-native tools improve.
  • New York showroom expansion and $1 billion revenue targets raise execution risk if traffic disappoints.

What makes Babylist unique

  • Babylist owns universal baby registry behavior across stores, unlike Amazon and Target registries.
  • Babylist combines registry, Babylist Health, Money, and Early Investor into one parent ecosystem.
  • Natalie Gordon and Jenn Hyman signal product-led, founder-driven execution through the September 2026 handoff.

Rent the Runway founder Jenn Hyman to lead $1B Babylist as CEO in rare founder-to-founder handoff

Jenn Hyman, who left Rent the Runway in May, will become CEO of baby registry service Babylist on 9 September. Babylist founder Natalie Gordon will transition to executive chair. The move represents a rare founder-to-founder CEO handoff. Gordon has built Babylist for 15 years, whilst Hyman spent 18 years at Rent the Runway, taking it public in 2021. Babylist is on track for $1 billion in revenue this year and approaching an IPO — roughly three times Rent the Runway's $330 million revenue last year. Gordon began considering stepping aside 18 months ago, before one of the company's strongest years. The pair met last autumn, and Hyman joined Babylist's board in January. Hyman will adapt from fashion's in-person culture to Babylist's fully remote workforce of 300 employees.
