40% of mid-sized organizations report unauthorized access to sensitive data. Tuesday, October 20th, 2026 Netwrix, a recognized leader in identity and data security, today released new findings from its 2026 Data and Identity Security Report looking at results by company size. Organizations with 500 to 999 employees reported the highest rate of unauthorized access to sensitive data in the past year at 40%. That compares with 18% of organizations with fewer than 500 employees and 27% of those with 10,000 or more. Eighty percent said they can't get a single view of where sensitive data lives and which identities can access it. That figure was 70% for both organizations under 500 employees and those with 10,000 or more. "Companies at this stage of growth are in an awkward spot," said Grady Summers, CEO of Netwrix. "They're big enough that access has become complicated, but they don't necessarily have the people or tools of a large enterprise. That's how you end up with a lot of access that nobody has a complete picture of." The 2026 report surveyed 2,317 IT and security professionals, including 1,344 at organizations with fewer than 1,000 employees. For that group, the Netwrix Security Research Team also found: * 76% said identity and data security aren't unified under one strategy. * 70% have privileged accounts with standing access to sensitive systems or data. Only 18% automatically remove that access when it's no longer needed. * 67% said AI and automation have increased the number of identities that can access sensitive data, compared with 50% of organizations with fewer than 500 employees. * 28% use home-grown or ad hoc tools to manage third-party privileged access. * Among those that experienced unauthorized access, 87% were confident their Active Directory was free of misconfigurations that could allow privilege escalation, and 85% were confident they could detect risky combinations of user access. * 56% of organizations that experienced unauthorized access estimated the financial impact at more than $100,000. Operational disruption and damage to customer trust were each reported by 47%. The findings looked different among organizations with fewer than 500 employees: * 23% hadn't conducted an Active Directory security assessment in the past year. Among organizations with 10,000 or more employees, that figure was 8%. * 18% said non-human identities aren't governed at all, compared with 2% of organizations with 10,000 or more employees. * 26% said they were unprepared for AI security, with no formal AI data inventory or usage policies in place. For organizations with fewer than 1,000 employees, budget was the most commonly cited barrier to improving identity and data security at 34%, followed by skills and staffing at 28%. Netwrix 1Secure(TM) is built for organizations that have outgrown basic security tools but don't have a full security operations center. The platform delivers an initial data and security risk assessment within an hour, includes more than 200 PingCastle-powered security checks, and equips lean IT and security teams with time saving capabilities like the Netwrix Neo AI assistant and AI-driven remediation guidance. 1Secure is available directly and through managed service providers, with pricing starting at $24 per identity per year. Netwrix will explore the research during Netwrix Innovation Week, Oct. 19-23, with practitioner sessions, live demonstrations and expert conversations on securing data and identities as AI changes how organizations work. A live 1Secure demonstration on Oct. 20 will show how mid-size teams can identify and address risky access. More information is available here. Climb adds Netwrix to its security portfolio, bringing data and identity security to VARs and MSPs. EATONTOWN, N.J., Oct. 14, 2026 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) - Climb, an international specialty technology distributor and wholly owned subsidiary of Climb Global Solutions, Inc. (NASDAQ: CLMB), today announced a distribution agreement with Netwrix, a global data and identity security company trusted by more than 13,000 organizations. The agreement gives Climb's VARs and MSPs access to Netwrix solutions, including the 1Secure(TM) platform, so they can help customers protect sensitive data and control who can access it across hybrid and AI-driven environments. Security is one of Climb's core focus areas, and organizations are under growing pressure to protect sensitive data and control access to it as they bring AI into hybrid environments. Adding Netwrix's data and identity security solutions helps Climb's partners innovate faster, build new revenue streams, and champion best-of-breed solutions for their customers. Netwrix helps organizations see exactly who and what can access their sensitive data and manage that access. Through the agreement, Climb's network of VARs and MSPs in North America can now source and resell Netwrix solutions, backed by the quoting, financing and channel support Climb is known for, making it easier for customers to evaluate, purchase and deploy Netwrix's solutions. Netwrix is seeing more customers ask where their sensitive data lives and who can access it, especially as AI tools and agents are granted access to more of it. This partnership gives Netwrix a broader path to reach those customers through partners who deliver solutions built to scale. "Every customer we can't reach directly is a customer whose data and identities stay exposed a little longer. Climb's network of VARs and MSPs gives us a fast, proven way to get Netwrix in front of more of those organizations, which is exactly what our mission calls for," said Britt Norwood, CRO at Netwrix. "Climb has built a reputation for making it easy for partners to bring new technology to their customers, and we're excited to be part of that community." "Security has always been core to our line card, and Netwrix strengthens that with a focus our partners are asking for: knowing where sensitive data lives and controlling who can get to it. It's a natural fit alongside the rest of our security portfolio, and it gives our partners another way to help their customers move forward with AI and hybrid environments without losing control of their data," said Dale Foster, CEO at Climb. "Netwrix has a strong reputation in the market, and we're glad to welcome them to Climb." Netwrix Auditor earns recognition on two 2026 Capterra shortlists. Netwrix Auditor has been included in the 2026 Capterra Shortlist for both Cybersecurity Software and Compliance Software, while also securing a place in the 2026 Software Advice FrontRunners for Cybersecurity Software. These distinctions are supported by more than 200 verified reviews, an overall rating of 4.5 out of 5, and 95% positive feedback. Professionals at over 13,000 organizations, including more than 120 Fortune 500 companies, rely on Auditor to consolidate visibility across hybrid IT environments and generate audit-ready evidence in real time. Most IT teams understand reasonably well what is taking place across their environments. Demonstrating that knowledge during an audit, however, can be far more difficult. Records of configuration changes, access activity, and user actions are often scattered across separate logs and disconnected systems. When auditors request evidence, teams may therefore spend hours searching through records and manually assembling the required information. This disconnect between what actually occurred and what can be demonstrated is a recurring challenge for IT and security teams during every audit cycle. Netwrix Auditor was designed specifically to close that gap. This year, recognition based on the experiences of its users provided further evidence of its value. Earned through real reviews. Both rankings are based on verified user ratings and therefore reflect actual customer experience. What users are saying. Boris M. Said that In general, it is an excellent tool for monitoring within IT, adding to zero trust concepts, including supervision of RDP connections, monitoring of SQL instructions in critical databases and access and use of user files. Corey C. Said that Netwrix is useful for real time auditing and getting notifications when certain pre-defined rules have been met. These comments come directly from IT professionals describing their practical experience of gaining deeper visibility into their environments. The problem it solves. Rather than requiring teams to reconstruct activity from fragmented logs, Netwrix Auditor provides a unified visibility layer across Active Directory, file servers, SharePoint, Exchange, databases, and other systems. It records who made a change, what was changed, when the activity occurred, and where it originated. Automated reporting and near real-time alerts further reduce the need for time-consuming manual searches through logs. The same centralized visibility makes audit trails easier to search and compliance evidence easier to understand, including for stakeholders without deep technical expertise. This can make the difference between entering an audit fully prepared and having to assemble evidence under pressure. Get Netwrix Auditor demo.
Netwrix expands Microsoft Cloud Security for AI agent identities. Netwrix has expanded Netwrix PingCastle and Netwrix Threat Manager with new capabilities designed to strengthen identity security across Microsoft cloud environments. The latest releases add visibility into AI agent identities, expand Microsoft Entra ID coverage to more than 100 risk checks, and introduce threat detection for Azure Files, helping organizations identify and respond to emerging identity and cloud security risks. Organizations are deploying AI agents faster than they can govern them. Each agent is an identity holding real permissions inside the enterprise environment, yet most exist outside any inventory, ownership, or review process. A Cloud Security Alliance survey found that fewer than a quarter of organizations have a formally adopted policy for creating or removing the identities their AI systems run on, and more than 16% don't track when a new one is created at all. Security Products & Services The consequences are measurable: in its 2026 Data and Identity Security Report, Netwrix found a 43% breach rate among organizations where AI had significantly expanded the number of identities needing access, compared with 11% where it hadn't. Netwrix PingCastle extends its Microsoft Entra ID coverage to 102 risk checks, extending the tool's trusted Active Directory posture assessment into the cloud identity plane. Security teams and administrators can now assess identity risk across both on-premises AD and Entra ID with the same fast, prioritized approach that has made PingCastle a community favorite. Netwrix Threat Manager adds new visibility into AI agent identities in Microsoft Entra ID, giving security teams an inventory of the agents operating in their environment and the access they hold. That inventory is the missing foundation for most organizations: the Netwrix report found only 19% of organizations fully govern non-human identities such as service accounts and AI agents. Threat Manager already provides visibility and monitoring for another critical non-human identity category, service accounts, through actionable risk insights, abnormal-behavior detection, and attack context for faster triage; this release extends that coverage to AI agents. The latest Netwrix Threat Manager release also adds new threat detection for Azure Files, protecting file shares against ransomware, abnormal behavior, and high-risk changes such as the creation of open access. Agent-specific threat detection is planned for a subsequent release, building on the visibility foundation delivered today. Machine Learning & Artificial Intelligence The new capabilities complement Microsoft's native tooling with independent assessment and visibility across the Microsoft identity plane. "Earlier this year, we gave organizations visibility into what AI agents can access. This release goes a layer deeper: which agents exist at all," said Jeff Warren, CPO at Netwrix. "Our research found fewer than one in five organizations fully govern non-human identities, and agents are the fastest-growing category. You can't review access for an identity you don't know you have." These releases advance Netwrix's strategy to unify identity and data security. PingCastle's assessment engine already powers more than 200 checks within the company's 1Secure(TM) platform, reflecting the same independent posture assessment approach now extended deeper into the Microsoft identity plane. Netwrix PingCastle 4.0 and Netwrix Threat Manager 3.3 are available now.
