Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Enrollment in an Illinois Central College-accredited Medical Assistant program is required.
  • Demonstrate the knowledge and skills to provide patient services appropriate to the ages served.
  • Maintain a positive working relationship with the department and communicate with other departments as needed to resolve operational problems and use resources effectively in delivering quality patient care.
  • Support clinic compliance with applicable federal, state, local, and organizational rules, regulations, protocols, and procedures governing clinical medical services, workplace safety, public health, and confidentiality.
  • Support and participate in continuous quality improvement efforts designed to improve patient outcomes.
  • Work in consultation with clinical teams and clinical support staff to develop and implement policies and procedures that maximize patient-centered communication and services.
  • Maintain and assure the confidentiality of patient information in accordance with organizational policies.
  • Report building and equipment problems through appropriate channels.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Proficient computer skills for chart completion.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to interact with patients and enhance patient relations.
  • Basic Life Support certification is required within the first 90 days of hire.
Responsibilities
  • Work under the direction of a Certified Medical Assistant mentor to provide basic clinical, clerical, and technical support for patient care, comfort, and safety.
  • Schedule appointments, maintain medical records, and manage billing and coding information for insurance purposes.
  • Take and record vital signs, medical histories, and patient information.
  • Prepare patients and treatment rooms for examinations.
  • Collect, log, and prepare blood, tissue, and other laboratory specimens for testing.
  • Clean and sterilize medical equipment and instruments and dispose of biomedical waste according to standards.
  • Explain treatment procedures, medications, diets, and physician instructions to patients.
  • Assist clinicians and physicians during examinations and treatments, including handing instruments, giving injections, and removing sutures when within scope of competency and training.
  • Prepare and administer medications as directed by clinicians, the Certified Medical Assistant preceptor, and organizational policy and protocol.
  • Perform routine laboratory tests, waived laboratory testing, and sample analyses within the scope of competency and training.
  • Perform general office duties, including answering telephones, taking dictation, and completing insurance forms.
  • Authorize drug refills, pend medication refills, and provide prescription information to pharmacies.
  • Apply and change bandages, dressings, and splints.
  • Inventory and order medical, laboratory, and office supplies or equipment.
  • Operate X-ray, electrocardiogram, and other equipment to administer routine diagnostic tests.
  • Set up medical laboratory equipment.
  • Check patients in by documenting vital signs, pain, medications, allergies, reasons for visits, and required flow sheets in electronic health record templates.
  • Review patient charts for outstanding laboratory results, X-ray results, and medical visits since the last appointment.
  • Manage assigned electronic health record in-baskets and run electronic health record reports according to protocol.
  • Stock and clean examination rooms, examination tables, and other furniture using appropriate cleansing agents and protocols.
  • Perform quality-control duties in accordance with regulatory and departmental policies.
  • Maintain equipment and supplies and practice safety, environmental, and infection-control methods.
  • Travel to various clinic locations as needed.
  • Perform assigned clerical and department-related tasks in a continuously changing medical practice.
  • Attend required staff, department, and other meetings.
