Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a closely related field is required.
  • A minimum of 5 years of progressive accounting experience in the construction industry environment is required, preferably in general contracting with design-build and construction manager/general contractor contract types.
  • Experience managing the accounts payable cycle, including commitment matching and vendor master governance.
  • Applied experience with ASC 606 revenue recognition in a construction work-in-progress accounting context.
  • Experience managing multi-entity monthly close, including intercompany eliminations and consolidated financial statement preparation; equity-method joint venture or consortium accounting experience is preferred.
  • Advanced knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles, financial controls, fraud prevention practices, tax regulations, and construction industry accounting standards.
  • Experience managing and developing accounting staff, with the capacity to provide transactional and technical accounting guidance beyond reviewing outputs.
  • Proficiency with Foundation, Viewpoint, Sage, Acumatica Construction, or a comparable construction enterprise resource planning system.
Responsibilities
  • Lead the monthly financial close from kickoff through finalized, generally accepted accounting principles-compliant financial statements across all COLAS entities.
  • Prepare additional financial reports and clearly communicate synthesized financial information to financial and non-financial stakeholders.
  • Maintain the work-in-progress schedule as a current operational document by monitoring job cost entry and commitment tracking, validating percent-complete estimates with project teams, and incorporating defensible cost-to-complete assumptions.
  • Maintain reconciled balance sheets across all entities in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles and accounting best practices.
  • Govern journal entry preparation and intercompany eliminations with clear supporting calculations.
  • Govern the full accounts payable cycle, vendor management, and corporate card spending while maintaining audit-trail standards across payment methods and using the vendor master as a fraud control point.
  • Maintain audit-ready fixed-asset subledger-to-general-ledger reconciliations.
  • Administer ASC 842 lease accounting across equipment and facility leases.
  • Ensure adequate burden allocation and internal equipment-rate structures.
  • Oversee equity-method accounting positions where applicable.
  • Serve as the primary technical resource for direct-report staff and identify and address root causes of recurring escalations that indicate training needs, process gaps, or system interventions.
  • Maintain continuous audit readiness by coordinating and preparing prepared-by-client documentation and identifying and escalating control deficiencies to the Controller with proposed remediation.
  • Evaluate and develop direct-report staff across transactional and technical accounting functions, set role-level expectations, establish visible growth pathways, and build bench depth against single-point-of-failure risk.
  • Partner closely with the Controller and operational leaders to ensure the accuracy, integrity, and timeliness of general ledger and financial close, construction revenue and project accounting, accounts payable, fixed assets, and specialized accounting operations.
Desired Qualifications
  • General contracting experience with design-build and construction manager/general contractor contract types.
  • Equity-method joint venture or consortium accounting experience.
