Requirements
  • A BS in Electrical Engineering or equivalent demonstrated capability.
  • Six or more years designing control systems for switched-mode power converters.
  • Direct, hands-on experience designing control loops for switched-mode power converters that reached validated hardware, with the ability to describe the topology, control mode, switching and sampling frequencies, compensator structure, crossover, and phase margin for a personally designed converter.
  • Working command of small-signal modeling, such as state-space averaging, and frequency-domain design, including Bode and Nyquist analysis, crossover, phase and gain margin, and right-half-plane zeros.
  • Working command of discrete-time control, including s-to-z mapping with bilinear/Tustin and zero-order hold, effects of sampling and computational delay on phase margin, aliasing, and quantization.
  • Fluency in PLECS or MATLAB/Simulink, including building converter models rather than only running existing models.
  • Proficiency in Python or MATLAB scripting for simulation automation and data analysis.
  • Working proficiency in C, including reading and writing control code, running it in simulation, and evaluating whether firmware matches the design.
  • Understanding of digital implementation constraints, including PWM-triggered ADC sampling, update latency, fixed-point range and resolution, and ISR timing budgets.
  • Independent lab capability using oscilloscopes, isolated and differential probes, current probes, electronic loads, bidirectional supplies, and a network or frequency response analyzer for loop gain measurement.
  • A track record of written control design specifications successfully implemented by another engineer.
Responsibilities
  • Derive small-signal plant models for buck, boost, four-switch buck-boost, and multiphase interleaved topologies, including coupled-inductor effects, right-half-plane zeros, and operating-point variation across the operating envelope.
  • Design compensators, including PID, type II/III, and 2p2z/3p3z, and feedforward paths to meet bandwidth, phase margin, and gain margin targets for average current mode inner loops and voltage outer loops.
  • Discretize designs for digital implementation, accounting for sampling, zero-order hold, computational delay, and PWM update latency, and specify sample rates and firmware delay budgets.
  • Build closed-loop converter models in PLECS and/or MATLAB/Simulink from scratch, and use SPICE-class tools for switching-cell verification when averaged models are insufficient.
  • Write simulation and analysis code for scripted parameter sweeps, component-tolerance and worst-case analysis, and automated stability checks across the operating envelope in Python or MATLAB.
  • Run production C control code within simulation using PLECS C-Script/DLL blocks or Simulink S-functions to verify firmware against the design before hardware testing.
  • Define operating-mode behavior, including constant current, constant voltage, constant power, current limit, soft-start, buck-to-boost transition, phase shedding, and charge/discharge direction reversal, with transition conditions and bumpless transfer requirements.
  • Define protection thresholds and response-time requirements for cycle-by-cycle current limit, overvoltage, undervoltage, and thermal derating, coordinating with hardware and firmware teams.
  • Translate each design into an implementable specification for firmware, including block diagrams, difference equations, coefficients, fixed-point scaling guidance, saturation and anti-windup limits, and expected margins.
  • Work with the firmware team through implementation, code review, and bench debug, and review firmware control code for fidelity to the design.

  • Experience with wide-bandgap power stages, including GaN and SiC, and their effects on control such as sense-chain noise, blanking, and dead-time sensitivity.
  • Experience with digital power controllers such as dsPIC33C, TI C2000, or STM32G4, including their PWM and ADC architectures.
  • Experience with hardware-in-the-loop or real-time simulation platforms such as PLECS RT Box, Typhoon HIL, or OPAL-RT.
  • Experience with Python numerical tools such as NumPy, SciPy, and python-control for control analysis.
  • Experience with battery energy storage, EV charging, photovoltaic inverters, or grid-interactive converters, including BMS interaction such as current-limit negotiation and precharge.
  • Exposure to functional safety and certification, including IEC 61508 concepts, UL 1973, UL 1998, UL 9540, and FMEA.
  • Experience applying version control and code review to models and analysis scripts, not only firmware.

Echion and Proper Voltage partner to develop 1.6MW UPS platform for AI data centers.

Echion and Proper Voltage partner to develop 1.6MW UPS platform for AI data centers. 13 Oct 2026 By: IDCNOVA Region: North America Battery materials developer Echion Technologies has signed a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding with battery storage firm Proper Voltage to co-develop an integrated Uninterruptible Power Supply platform tailored for AI data centers, the two companies announced. The collaboration will see Echion's XNO battery technology integrated into Proper Voltage's existing 480V and 800V Vault UPS system, creating a unified product dubbed VaultX. According to the companies, the system will deliver 1.6MW of power and 84kWh of capacity in 480V or 800V rack configurations, with the aim of significantly shortening deployment timelines while mitigating the impact of power swings that are increasingly common in high-density AI compute environments. The partnership underscores a growing push across the data center industry to rethink power infrastructure as AI workloads place unprecedented demands on uptime, power quality, and operational resilience. Conventional UPS architectures, built around legacy battery chemistries, have struggled to keep pace with the rapid charge and discharge cycles required by modern AI facilities, where even brief power disturbances can disrupt training runs and inference services worth millions of dollars. Echion's XNO technology is an anode chemistry that the Cambridge, UK-based company says enables lithium-ion batteries to safely charge or discharge in three to six minutes across more than 50,000 cycles. That capability is central to the VaultX value proposition, according to Echion CEO Jean de La Verpilliere. "AI data centers need exactly what XNO was built for, which is extremely high charge and discharge rates sustained across tens of thousands of cycles," he said. "Our materials and cells are built for duty cycles that aren't survivable for conventional chemistries, and collaborating with Proper Voltage enables us to implement these capabilities in a market-leading UPS platform and ensure that operators can benefit from VaultX in the shortest possible amount of time." Proper Voltage, headquartered in Carlsbad, California, develops control and integration technology designed to help advanced batteries operate reliably in power systems without requiring complete redesigns. CEO Charlier Welch noted that the company's architecture was intentionally built for technology transitions. "Our architecture was purposely designed so that operators can adopt new and emerging battery technology without redesigning their power systems, which is why integrating XNO into our Vault architecture is straightforward," he said. "What this system changes for an operator is the business case." For data center operators, the implications extend beyond incremental hardware improvement. As AI clusters grow denser and more power-hungry, UPS systems are evolving from passive backup assets into active components of power management strategy. A platform capable of handling rapid, repeated charge-discharge cycles could reduce reliance on oversized battery banks, lower total cost of ownership, and improve grid-interactive capabilities. The MoU between Echion and Proper Voltage signals that battery innovation is becoming a competitive differentiator in the race to build AI-ready data center infrastructure.
