SiFive and AMD Collaborate to Optimize AMD ROCm on RISC-V Datacenter Servers. September 15, 2026 Press play to listen to this content Open-source software and open-standard architectures to accelerate next-generation datacenter AI compute SANTA CLARA, Calif., Sept. 15, 2026 - Today at the AI Infra Summit, SiFive, Inc., and AMD showcased a demonstration of AMD ROCm running on SiFive's recently announced BigSky Datacenter Development Platform. In a demonstration-only system, the companies showed the ability to run the modern Gemma4-E2B LLM model using ROCm 10.0 on SiFive servers powered by the SiFive Performance P870-D CPUs acting as the head node, and AMD Radeon AI PRO R9700 GPUs driving the inference offload. This collaboration brings together the best of open source software, the AMD ROCm ecosystem, and the best of RISC-V open standard architectures to enable next-generation datacenter AI compute. The two companies will continue to evaluate optimization of ROCm on RISC-V powered servers, aiming to speed up processing times and enable even more acceleration use cases and larger models in the future. "We are pleased to collaborate with AMD to bring the ROCm open software ecosystem to our BigSky datacenter development platform," said Matt Langman, SVP, Datacenter at SiFive. "By combining the leading open standard architecture with their open-source software, we are enabling hyperscalers and developers to run advanced AI workloads seamlessly on RISC-V. This is another pivotal milestone as we work to accelerate the adoption of RISC-V in the datacenter." "ROCm's open-source foundation enables developers to bring accelerated AI workloads to a broad range of systems," said Ramine Roane, corporate vice president, AI software product management, AMD. "This demonstration with SiFive is an early step in enabling developers to explore ROCm-based AI acceleration on RISC-V host platforms." To see the demo in person, stop by SiFive's booth inside the RISC-V International Pavilion at the AI Infra Summit this week, taking place September 15-17, 2026, at the Santa Clara Convention Center in Santa Clara, CA. The development server features 32 P870-D cores operating at 2.0GHz, 256GB DDR5-5600 memory, and 4x PCIe Gen5 x16 connectivity. It supports standard enterprise Linux releases, including Ubuntu 26.04 LTS and Red Hat RHEL10. SiFive is collaborating with Nvidia to port CUDA to RISC-V hardware and integrate NVLink Fusion into future platforms. The company has demonstrated CUDA running on the BigSky platform, enabling it to serve as a head node for large language model workloads on Nvidia GPUs. Lead customers, including hyperscalers and major system-on-chip hardware leaders, are currently running workloads on deployed BigSky systems. The platforms are available in limited quantities.
SiFive drives RISC-V into the data center with BigSky server platform. by Paul Lilly - Monday, August 24, 2026, 12:23 PM EDT SiFive introduced its BigSky SF-2U870 development platform today at Hot Chips 2026, delivering the first rackable 2U enterprise server driven by RISC-V hardware. Designed specifically for hyperscalers, chipmakers, and software vendors, the platform gives engineering teams a turnkey physical system to port enterprise code, profile workloads, and validate custom silicon designs before committing to full-scale production runs. Video Muted "Ultimately, we are focused on enabling customers to meaningfully optimize the TCO of their custom SoC solutions with SiFive IP. RISC-V in the datacenter isn't a distant aspiration any more, it is happening right now, and SiFive is leading the way," said Patrick Little, Chairman and CEO at SiFive. Inside, the 2U chassis packs 32 of SiFive's P870-D cores operating at 2GHz, along with 256GB of DDR5-5600 memory, a 3.84TB U.2 NVMe drive, 10/25Gbps OCP 3.0 networking, and 64 total lanes of PCIe Gen 5 x16 expansion. That high-speed I/O leaves room for double-wide GPUs and specialized hardware accelerators, and SiFive says the system is fully compliant with the RVA23 standard. What about software compatibility? This has long been a major hurdle for RISC-V server adoption, which gets a big boost with this release. BigSky supports standard enterprise operating systems right out of the box, including Canonical Ubuntu 26.04 LTS and Red Hat Enterprise Linux 10 (RHEL 10). "At Canonical, we are committed to driving open-source innovation from developer environments to the datacenter core," said Gordan Markuš, Director of Silicon Alliances at Canonical. "Out-of-the-box support for RVA23 and Ubuntu 26.04 LTS on SiFive's BigSky datacenter development platform provides the enterprise software foundation required to accelerate AI and cloud-native workloads on RISC-V. We are proud to collaborate with SiFive, and this seamless integration ensures our mutual customers can confidently port enterprise workloads and accelerate their transition to RISC-V in the datacenter today." SiFive also teamed up with NVIDIA to port CUDA to its RISC-V hardware and integrate NVLink Fusion into its future platforms, the company said. SiFive says its platforms are available immediately in limited production quantities, with "demand outpacing supply," currently. Paul is a seasoned geek who cut this teeth on the Commodore 64.
