Requirements
  • High school diploma or GED graduation is required.
  • Certification by AAMA, AMT, NHA-CCMA, NCMA, or ARMA is required.
  • Basic Life Support certification is required.
  • Applicants for Level II must have 1 year of clinical experience as a Certified Medical Assistant in a clinical setting; Level III requires 2 years; Level IV requires 3 years. One year of experience is provided for an Associate degree in Medical Assisting.
  • Applicants for Levels II, III, and IV must meet the requirements of the Medical Assistant, Certified (CMA/RMA) Ladder Program document.
Responsibilities
  • Perform patient intake, including vital signs, visit information, and other indicated clinical information.
  • Take telephone messages, document encounters, follow clinic protocols, and inform providers.
  • Administer medications and injections as ordered or directed by established protocols, following the six rights of medication administration.
  • Assist providers with annual exams, endometrial biopsies, intrauterine device placement, Nexplanon removal or insertion, miscarriage care, loop electrosurgical excision procedures, and colposcopies.
  • Participate in performance improvement projects.
  • Set up clinical procedures and perform high-level disinfection, sterilization, and other appropriate tasks within the scope of practice.
  • Obtain prior authorizations for medications and durable medical equipment as indicated.
  • Float within the clinic to cover patient and provider needs as delegated by the nurse manager, health center administrator, charge nurse, or nurse team lead.
  • Occasionally float to Raleigh, Durham, or other clinics to support clinical coverage.
Desired Qualifications
  • Graduation from a Medical Assistant program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs or the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools.
