Requirements
  • An accredited bachelor's degree in medical laboratory science, medical technology, clinical laboratory science, or a related science such as biology or chemistry, and completion of an accredited medical technology clinical practice program such as NAACLS, CAAHEP, or ABHES.
  • An alternative qualification is an accredited bachelor's degree including 16 semester hours in biological science, including one course in microbiology; 16 semester hours in chemistry, including one course in organic chemistry or biochemistry; and one course in mathematics, together with two years of post-certification clinical laboratory experience within the last ten years as a certified Medical Laboratory Technician through ASCP-BOC.
  • A minimum of one year of Medical Technologist experience within the last three years.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of laboratory medicine techniques and practices.
  • Demonstrated education and clinical training in the practice of laboratory medicine.
  • Candidates must be able to sit, stand, walk, lift, squat, bend, twist, and reach above the shoulders during the work shift.
  • Candidates must be able to lift up to 50 pounds from floor to waist, lift up to 20 pounds, carry up to 40 pounds a reasonable distance, and push or pull with 30 pounds of force.
Responsibilities
  • Rotate regularly through areas in which the technologist has been trained and is competent.
  • Perform a broad range of laboratory procedures in blood bank.
  • Perform advanced and complex laboratory procedures, recognize deviations from expected results, and analyze and correct problems using scientific principles.
  • Recognize and communicate predefined critical results affecting patient care.
  • Maintain the optimal functioning of laboratory equipment and keep appropriate documentation records; operate, calibrate, identify malfunctions, repair, and perform preventive maintenance on laboratory analyzers.
  • Perform and document quality control, quality assurance, and corrective actions related to test performance using statistical principles and theories of performance improvement.
  • Enter and verify laboratory results in the computer system; recognize deviations from expected results, and analyze and correct problems using scientific principles.
  • Perform other duties as assigned relating to the responsibilities of a Medical Technologist.
