Small Axe Studios is a new AAA team under 2K working on a new sports franchise.

Small Axe Studios is a new AAA team under 2K working on a new sports franchise. The studio is made up of a host of game industry veterans who have worked on several games, from UFC and FIFA to Need for Speed. 2K Games has announced the opening of a new studio based in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Named Small Axe Studios, the team will develop AAA games and includes many veterans of the gaming industry. Its key leadership roles include Aaron McHardy as vice president and executive producer, Gary Paterson as head of design, Tom Pan as head of operations, and Mike Thompson as head of engineering. McHardy has worked in the games industry for 21 years, and before joining 2K, had worked as an executive producer at Electronic Arts Vancouver on projects like Madden, College Football, and FIFA - now known as EA Sports FC. Paterson has a similar track record. He's a 22-year veteran who's worked on a wide range of sports titles including FIFA Manager, FIFA Street, and NBA Live during his time at EA. He has also worked on the Need for Speed franchise as studio design director at Criterion Games. Pan, having spent 20 years in the industry, has worked on games like UEFA Champions League, SSX, Tennis, NHL, UFC, and FIFA during his time at EA. Thompson has worked as technical director on NHL and UFC, running advanced technology teams during his EA tenure. Small Axe Studios has also hired Brent Breedveld as animation director, Karl Gryc as art director, and John Cruz as technical art director. The team as a whole is handled by head of HR Trisha MacWan, who has previously held HR leadership roles at Phoenix Labs and Glu Mobile. Breedveld has one of the most varied catalogues in terms of games he has worked on. During his 14-year tenure at Relic Entertainment as principal animator and animation director, he had a hand in shipping critically acclaimed strategy games like Age of Empires 4 and Company of Heroes. He has also worked on the original Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine. Going further back, Breedveld has a history in the film industry, having worked at Prime Focus World with film credits that include Watchmen and Superman Returns. Gryc - a 22-year veteran - has worked on several classic critically-acclaimed games like Company of Heroes, Dawn of War, Turok, Academy of Champions, Pure Futbol, Deserts of Kharak, and Sleeping Dogs. His most recent contributions can be seen in Homeworld 3 and Crossfire Legion - projects on which he served as art director. Currently, Small Axe Studios is looking to grow its teams and has posted job listings on its website for a variety of roles, ranging from lighting artist and senior gameplay online engineer to producer and even a gameplay systems software engineer. While the studio's first project hasn't yet been announced, Small Axe Studios has said that it is "built on a fiercely protected, ego-free culture" that prioritizes "coaching over criticism." As the wealth of experience across the studio's teams would indicate, Small Axe Studios is building "2K's next blockbuster sports franchise". Which sport will be tackled remains to be seen, though 2K might be looking to develop games across hockey, soccer, and American football to capitalize on the success of the NBA 2K series. 2K Announces New Studio Small Axe, Building "Next Blockbuster Sports Franchise"

14 August 2026 By Jamie Hore 2K announces new studio Small Axe, building "next blockbuster sports franchise" In brief: * 2K has announced Small Axe Studios, a new AAA developer born out of its 2K Sports Labs project * Small Axe features several former EA veterans among its ranks that worked on sports series like FIFA, Madden NFL, and NHL in the past * 2K says "Small Axe Studios will endeavor to build 2K's next blockbuster sports franchise" 2K has announced a new "AAA" development studio, Small Axe Studios, which will specialise in sports titles. 2K, which already has studios making series such as NBA 2K, WWE 2K, and PGA Tour 2K, had previously announced that it was setting up a new sports studio back in 2023. At the time, it was codenamed 2K Sports Lab. That has now become the Vancouver, Canada-based Small Axe Studios, which is being led by Vice President and Executive Producer Aaron Hardy. Before joining 2K, Hardy spent 17 years at EA Sports, working on its Madden NFL, College Football, and FIFA (now EA FC) series. There are several other EA veterans at Small Axe, including Head of Design Gary Paterson, who worked on series such as FIFA, FIFA Street, and Need For Speed during his almost 20-year stint. Head of Operations Tom Pan also spent close to two decades at EA, acting as a development director across series such as SSX, UFC, NHL, and FIFA. "Small Axe Studios will endeavor to build 2K's next blockbuster sports franchise," a 2K LinkedIn post reads. "The studio combines the passion of a startup with the scale of 2K to redefine the future of sports videogames." Job posts on the Small Axe website mention that it's working on "2K's next groundbreaking sports franchise" and a "brand-new IP." It is unclear what sport this new franchise will focus on. 2K was previously touted as a potential solution for FIFA following the organisation's split with EA in 2022. With its name no longer attached to EA's annual football sim, FIFA has looked to other gaming opportunities in recent years. As well as partnerships with Konami's eFootball and Sports Interactive's Football Manager, it recently released FIFA World Cup: Launch Edition exclusively on Netflix to a mostly negative critical reception. The game's developer, Refactor Games, was severely hit with layoffs in August 2026, just weeks after Launch Edition was released. However, Strauss Zelnick - the CEO of Take-Two Interactive, which owns 2K - has previously indicated to investors that partnering with FIFA to theoretically make an EA FC-style football game would be complicated. Borderlands 4 Bounty Pack 4 set for July 30 release.

Borderlands 4 Bounty Pack 4 set for July 30 release. Gearbox Software and 2K have confirmed that Borderlands 4's fourth paid expansion, Bounty Pack 4: Murders and Acquisitions, will launch on July 30, 2026, alongside the Version 1.9 title update. As detailed in the official Borderlands 4 update roadmap, the incoming DLC expands the looter-shooter's endgame roster with a fresh narrative campaign, an updated Vault Card, and exclusive high-tier equipment, available automatically to owners of the Deluxe and Super Deluxe editions or as a standalone purchase. The expansion takes players into Toxic Scowl, an industrial wasteland canyon corroded by acidic dust. Players are hired by Levaine, leader of the Electi, to arbitrate an escalating feud between two local Ripper factions: the pacifist commune known as The Flock and an aggressive group called The Blasphemers. The core story quest introduces branching dialogue and decision points that alter combat encounters, environmental hazards, and faction assistance during the final boss battle, encouraging players to complete multiple playthroughs to see every outcome. Combat encounters within Toxic Scowl feature four new bosses, comprising one main boss and three distinct mini-bosses stationed at outposts throughout the canyon. Defeating these targets rewards players with a chance to collect seven exclusive high-rarity items, including six new Legendary gear pieces and a Pearlescent Jakobs sniper rifle dubbed PRISM. Running parallel to the narrative expansion is Vault Card 4, which allows players to earn 24 desert-themed cosmetic items and four pieces of rerollable gear by accumulating experience points. Gearbox also provided a preview of post-July updates, confirming Story Pack 2: FL4K and the Last Resort for release on September 10 alongside Version 1.10. That expansion marks the return of Borderlands 3 Vault Hunter FL4K on a mission to track down his lost skag across a jungle island, while simultaneously debuting Loveless the Hacker, a new playable character utilizing cybernetics and digital virus constructs.

Now you can beat GTA 6 answers out of the Take-Two boss in WWE 2K26.

Now you can beat GTA 6 answers out of the Take-Two boss in WWE 2K26. 2K Sports released a new batch of downloadable content for WWE 2K26 earlier today, with Matt Cardona, La Parka, and WWE legends Torrie Wilson and Brian Pillman headlining the additions. However, hidden within the latest update is another addition to the roster that not even diehard WWE fans would expect: Strauss Zelnick, the CEO of 2K parent company Take-Two Interactive, is now playable in WWE 2K26. Zelnick is depicted in a blue suit and dress shoes, and he currently boasts a 77 overall rating; for comparison, WWE legend Stone Cold Steve Austin, who sits next to Zelnick on the roster page, has a rating of 97. Jun 4, 2026 The CEO's entrance music is "My Way" by Frank Sinatra, a song that's exclusive to Zelnick. The in-game jukebox will not play the song, nor can it be assigned to any other wrestler, real or customized, through the creation suite. YouTube user Xain Wani posted a video of Zelnick's entrance, which also includes a custom video on the Titantron as well as unique commentary, which found its way onto ResetEra. Zelnick's inclusion was not mentioned in the official press release for the DLC pack, so many players were caught by surprise. This is also not the first time a real-world gaming executive found their way into a video game. A downloadable chapter of Nier: Automata saw players face off against then-CEO Yosuke Matsuda, as well as Platinum Games president Kenichi Sato, in 2017.
